“Place of worship”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

If you are going to worship, then it is a typical Hindu temple with all the good and bad that comes with us.
As far as the structure goes they have some beautiful carvings, if you get time to stop and see them it is quite pretty.

“Worth hiring a guide.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

A taxi dropped us off and we kind of "fell into" hiring a guide. No mention of fee, etc. In retrospect, however, I don't think I would have gotten much out of the place just wandering around. Explanations were necessary. Just negotiate up front on the price. It's worth the visit since you will see cremations going on, monkeys having a blast, shrines and statues, a very Hindu site.

“Considered the most holy temple of Shiva...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

Located on the banks of the Bagmati River, the temple is just outside of Boudha in the outskirts of Kathmandu. One can see devout Hindu pilgrims visiting the temple daily as well as funeral pyres of local and not so local Hindus. The local Sadhus or Babas are very nice and interesting to talk to and will do their best to answer questions. The Milk Baba is especially friendly and world famous. Shivaratri, the annual celebration of Shiva is a crazy and jubilant event that is not to be missed if you are in the area. All in all a worthwhile place to visit, and one of the few major Hindu temples that even allow non-Hindus inside.

“Faith overwhelms the senses”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 1, 2013

If you go with devotion - just that is enough. However like most Hindu shrines - this could do with a lot better facilities management.

“the cremating temple”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

i had no idea what i was visiting..but our guide told us it was a cremating temple and showed us the cremating site (up to 45 a day) alongside a river that flows to the ganges...i could barely handle the smell of burning hair (and please no jokes about bbq)...our guide (beware of probin (sp); he overcharges) showed us where the rich people are cremated (up stream) and then the boys looking for gold (yes, the gold teeth from the rich cremated)...we crossed the bridge to view a series of lingam altars...thus the theme of life and death...
