“The Best Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2009

I and my wife stayed in Shanker Hotel for ten nights and we really loved it. Its garden is magnificent and the swimming pool is just perfect! In addition, it is located near to Thamel and Durbar Marg where the tourists visit frequently (especially Thamel). The only thing I did not like was the available TV channels selection. We checked some other hotels in Kathmandu too, but regarding the room rates Shanker proved to be the best choice.

Very friendly staff and very helpful - for that reason I loved it.. but, What i did not like was that it was not possible to get a look at the view outside. We had a view at the wall with two small windows. Almost no view from the window, so room was very dark, and only a small window to open to get some fresh air. Housekeeping was really good. Breakfast very poor. Beverages too expensive. Location good if you want to go to Thamel. Very good hotel for first time travelers in groups to Nepal.

The Shanker Hotel is a former Rana palace that still embodies the real charm of a former colonial era. There is real character in its old style service, the courtesy of staff, the laid back atmosphere and spacious gardens, a quiet haven just one step removed from the maddening crowds of the streets of Kathmandu. It is only minutes walking distance too from the main tourist district of Thamel. It is a perfect spot to embark upon or relax after a hike, trek or mountain climb in the Himalayas as I found when trekking with the Himalayan Glacier company.

SHANKER PALACE hotel Kathmandu
LOVED THIS RANA PALACE

It was our third stay at the Shanker Palace .Each of the other hotels in Kathmandu might have a twin or very similar establishment in some other country .Not the Shanker. This ex- Rana palace is unique .The beautiful dark hardwood wainscoting good air /con rooms modern bathrooms are set off by a huge , magnificent garden where all the upper class Nepalese celebrate their weddings .
We’d love to go back soon.

The Shanker is one of the oldest hotels in Kathmandu. It looks really nice from the outside, and the lobby is also very stylish. Staff are extremely helpful. However, rooms are not really modern, and quite a few things need to be replaced. I would recommend this hotel for leisure travellers for its location, nice building and friendly staff, but I would not recommend it to business travellers looking for very modern or well-equipped rooms.

I always make a point of being polite to people, but at the Shanker I hardly felt welcome at all, just another trekker, bustled off to a dank, odd, split level room with no opening window, pigeons and pigeon droppings on the ledge outside. There always seemed to be flunkies hanging around hoping to get a bit more baksheesh for doing the job they were already paid to do. The breakfasts were a chunder wonder, strange bread, pellet-like beans, seriously greasy bacon, scrambled egg ranging in constistency from hardly cooked to tarmacadam, dried salty frankfurter pices, watery juice, with coffee to open the sluices at both ends. (How about some nice Nepalese food, maybe some rice?) Despite daily cleaning of the pool, I got conjunctivitis within three hours of swimming there. The beer was the most expensive in Nepal. The fine-looking building is a major roosting point for Kathmandu pigeon population - they carry & excrete various pathogens. When checked out I was challenged by the door staff as to whether or not I had paid - I was furious -were they hoping for another tip? The Shanker is a short distance from Thamel, but with two ghastly roads to cross, poor street lighting & dodgy-looking transvestites & their pimps hanging around after dark.
I moved to another hotel in Chhetrapati, where they said 'Hello' and smiled at me when I walked in - I felt welcome and at ease there, but not at the Chancre.

  • Liked — The moment I left.
  • Disliked — The attitude of the staff.

a peaceful Oasis 10 - 15 mins walk away from the Tourist shops of Tamul. Friendly staff everywhere, full marks for service. Enjoyed the pool & food but watch the strength of the local Everest beer.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old. ... more   less
