“Good hotel but could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

Big rooms - with small height. Still have a palace like feeling. But in evening - they don't put on the out side lights; else could be a better view.

Average food -

I should mention an incident - the gatekeeper was greeting and saluting only WHITE people - not Indians.

Short walk from the happening Thamel area. Very clean and modern room at a decent price. Almost looks and feels like a heritage hotel (maybe it is).
Breakfast spread also good, something for vegetarians like us. Dal makhni and roti was also good. Reception and room service also prompt and efficient. Only issue was that one of the evenings because of rain the kitchen was not fully operational and there was no room service for dinner and the only option was a dinner buffet.

Thank you for having taken the time to review us on tripadvisor.com.

The Shanker team appreciates your positive comment in regards to our property heritage look and feel. I am glad to hear that you appreciated the quality of our breakfast and also our reception & room service personnel that you referred to as being ‘quick and efficient’. It is feedback such as this that is very rewarding to them.

Your comment with regard to the interruption in the kitchen service has been noted. Please note that this was a one-time event caused by environmental factors. Kathmandu witnessed torrential rainfall (more than 140mm) due to which the power supply in the kitchen was interuppted. Due to security reasons, we had to shut down the kitchen service until the power supply problem was fixed. This event shall not repeat in the future.

We look forward welcoming you back to our hotel in the near future.

We spent 5 nights at the Shanker hotel and it was run by a first class efficient staff. My biggest surprise was how well the wi fi worked in our room with my Tablet. The breakfast buffet was excellent also. We enjoyed plenty of hot water with good pressure in the shower and every day the room was cleaned well.

This is one of the best hotel I have stayed. All the employees/staffs of the hotel seems to be very professional. I would rate ambiance, hospitality and food
as 5.It was a great experience staying there. Its cost effective. Also they showed us some flexibility which proved they are more focused on customer satisfaction rather than money.

The only problem we faced was internet connectivity. The Wi-Fi was not working properly. May be it was a temporary issue.

Overall the stay was awesome.

Old palace converted to hotel with big beautiful garden. Pool is small but beautiful. Rooms are spacious. Some are quite big in comparison to others so it is advisable to look for a couple of rooms before checking in. Breakfast was very decent and different kinds of tastes were catered to. Food at the restaurant was not that good for my family. There are better places in close vicinity to dine. The hotel is centrally located and the Thamel market is just 5-6 mints walk away. The hotel staff is very cooperative and try to cater to the special needs and requests to the best of their capability. An example is that they arranged for the Star Cricket channel for us on our request so that we did not miss the final cricket match of Champions trophy. The transportation provided by the hotel is slightly expensive when compared to the taxi rates available outside. However, one can find taxis easily just outside the hotel owing to its location. Overall, they provided us with a very comfortable stay at a very reasonable price!

I visited kathmandu in june and stayed in Shanker hotel for two nights.
A good hotel with spacious rooms but small toilets.
Food is good and healthy. Staff is courteous and helpful. Though I lost my night suit there, but I think it was not intentional. A good choice and good location.
