“Hotel that feels more like home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2010

Stayed here for a week for a conference.
This is not your typical "corporate" 5 star hotel with a bland atmosphere; you have a sense of place when you stay here. The Yak and Yeti makes you feel like you are in Nepal, in all the best ways.
The location is fantastic, with a short walk to many of the best tourist areas, shopping, and decent restaurants nearby.
The common areas are very nice. Main restaurant is good, coffee shop and pub are fine. The Gardens, pool and clay tennis courts are a highlight and are well maintained.
True, the guest rooms are a bit dated but are clean and comfortable; they feel more like a home than many of the corporate chains that I stay in. The a/c and hot water were always fine in temperature.
Just like a home, there are minor flaws, but the positive attitude of the staff more than make up for them. And do pay a visit to the adjoining conference facilities which are located in a historic former palace and look at the old photos to get a sense of the place before and appreciation that it is being preserved.
All in all, a pleasant place which made me feel welcome.
And, for conferences, the staff did a great job in organizing, setting up, and catering for the event. The conference rooms were excellent, with good a/v support and temperatures were right the whole time.
Hotel also has an adjoining casino and nightclub but as these are away from the guest rooms you might not even notice them!

Driving thru the streets of Kathmandu we were wondering what we had gotten ourselves into but when we turned off the main road into the grounds of the Hotel Yak & Yeti, we were quite relieved.

The hotel is a classic international hotel catering to a wide variety of travellers...the breakfast buffet has something for everyone. The service was very good and the rooms very comfortable.

The hotel is well situated within the city as there is lots to see and do within walking distance.

Pros: Awesome staff and service, pretty court yard, casino, location
Cons: Beds aren't the best, rooms could be updated

This is the second time I stayed at this hotel and still enjoy visiting. The Yak and Yeti, a converted palace, has a beautiful court yard, casino and night club, but what really makes this property stand out is the service. Staff goes out of their way to make sure your stay is pleasant. The last time I was here, I had asked one of the managers where I could buy real saffron, he insisted to take care of it for me and asked his Chef to get some extra for me when he went shopping. What hotel does that?! I agree that the place may have a little wear around the edges, but it's location and people more than make up for it.

Yak and yeti hotel

I enjoyed a 2 night stay at the yak and yeti hotel, which is supposed to be a five star but I would rate it a good four star. I had a superior room upgraded to a delux, not sure what the superior room is like but the delux was pretty standard. The bed was large (King I think) with perculier cube shaped cushions which their passing off as pillows. (They do have normal pillows which are nothing special).

The room itself is spacious with an on-suite which has a bath tub and shower. My flush wasn't working properly and I didn't ask for it to be repaired. I'm sure they would have had it sorted if I asked them. Don't worry I still managed to use it. The toiletries provided included shampoo, shower gel and body lotion which are quite good and enough towels to go around. The room included a 21 inch CRT tv, which had plenty of channels to keep me entertained, note that most channels are Bollywood with a few sports, news and movie channels. A fruit basket was provided but only included apples, some mangos would have been nice. I tried some at breakfast and they were delicious.

My room was on the 5th floor overlooking the fantastic garden, pond and swimming pool, however the pidgeons seem to rest on the window ledge and can get annoying after a while. I noticed the cleaner scraping off the pidgeon poop in the morning.

Also the bath room tiling could do with some new grout. There were no insects and overall the place is generally clean.

The hotel itself is grand, and connects to an adjacent building that hosts grand banquetting halls and two hotel restaurants, one is called the Chimney which serves exquisite Russian cuisine, the other is a Chinese restaurant. Unfortunately I didn't try either and stuck with the buffet in the sunrise restaurant. The food was average, not halal either. The price is reasonable and you could be expecting to pay about £13gbp after tax for a meal. Breakfast was included and it had a medium selection which included continental and local specialities.

The service was great as expected, the staff had good English and knowledgable of the area and general information. Hotel pick up and drop off was included in my package. Most people are generally happy with a 100rs tip which is about a quid. A short 10min taxi ride can cost around 100rs. You should be able to fix a price before you get into the taxi.

The hotel is conveniently located near the Durbar Murg and the Royal Palace museum is only a 5 min walk away. The main road nearby, called Durbar Murg has a host of Western Shops, restaurants and bars. Another location which is a 5-10min taxi ride is Thamel which has a few bars and pubs. Kathmandu has loads to see and do so would recommend a visit and would also recommend the Yak and Yeti. 5 star at a reasonable price.

Note that there is a visa fee of around 25 USD upon arrival.

I was assaulted and robbed not far from the hotel and immediately came running to the hotel to ask for help. The security head as a soft spoken Mr. Krishna who did not want to do more than show me the way to the police station. He was so nervous when speaking to the police that I felt totally defeated in this city. He refused to accompany me with the police to identify the location and thus I had to spend 2 hours on the streets trying to do the routine at midnight and struggling with their language.
There is a law and order situation around the hotel. Watch out as you are being watched by con-artists as you leave the hotel. They will give you various stories to show you places just to take all you have. It’s best to leave in a car or taxi directly from the entrance rather than by foot.
The good part of the hotel was the food and its garden at the back.

I have stayed at the Yak and Yeti several times before but I think after my last stay in May 2010, I will not repeat it. The hotel per say is beautiful but the rooms are quite run down... It is simply not maintained and the upkeep is below standards.

We changed two rooms... The first one was adjacent to the elevator and so each time the elevator went up and down there was a rumbling sound ( very disturbing) the other one had poor airconditioning.

The breakfast is highly missable. The food is strictly average.

The only plus is its central location. It opens up to the popular Durbar Road and is a short walk to Thamel.

Yak and Yeti is not happening for me again...The Hyatt or Radisson are options you might want to check out.

You will not get any hotel in Kathmandu located strategically located than Yak and Yeti. This is one of the premier hotels in Nepal and indeed located in the prime center of Kathmandu. It lives upto its name and fame and you will not be dissappointed. We stayed in suite room and alas it was a double bed room suite with most modern amenities. The interiors can be explained in one word 'Fantastic'. The food had many varities. The only issue was the lack of space in resturant. Expect this hotel always crowded. A classic 5 star hotel.
