As a family, we spent 8 days at the Hyatt Regency, Kathmandu in February 2013. This was our first visit to Nepal and we will definitely return to this wonderful country.
The Hyatt sits in it's own peaceful grounds, overlooking the Boudhanath Stupa which can be walked to in 5-10 minutes from the rear gate of the hotel. The Stupa is a must place to visit. Have some lunch on one of the many rooftop terraces overlooking the temple and take in the atmosphere. There is also a well stocked supermarket opposite the main gate for provisions. The hotel is conveniently located near the airport and is a welcome oasis after the chaos and dust of Kathmandu. They also offer a free shuttle throughout the day to various districts in
Kathmandu, with Thamel being a great place to shop and experience the hustle and bustle of the
city. However, you do have to make your own way back which is not a problem, as taxis are numerous and cheap, but make sure you agree a price before you get in.
We opted for a Club Room on the 5th floor and had wonderful views of the Tibetan temple. Both room and bathroom were spacious, bed was comfortable, linens and towels clean with the usual selection of Hyatt toiletries. Also, complementary water provided every day and there was an abundance of hot water for showering. However, they do need to upgrade the TV to a flat screen which would be in keeping with their star rating.
Club Room and Executive Lounge:
We would definitely recommend paying extra for the Club Room. On arrival, we were immediately taken up to the Club Lounge to complete the checking in process and given a welcome drink. They provide an adequate selection of drinks and snacks throughout the day and offer a good continental breakfast, with eggs to order as an alternative to the full buffet breakfast served downstairs....the choice is yours. Between 5.30pm and 7.30pm, an excellent selection of alcoholic drinks and hors d'oeuvres is served with a smile. Transfers to and from the airport are also included in the Club Room price.
The buffet breakfast offered a superb selection of both Western and Asian dishes. In general, the food was of an excellent standard and the service of tea and coffee was prompt. We ordered room service from both restaurants and had them served in our room and in the Club Lounge. All food was delicious and served in a timely manner. Enjoyed a few drinks on the terrace and at the poolside bar.
The hotel has a spectacular foyer, outdoor swimming pool and children's pool. They also have an outdoor whirlpool and Spa. Unfortunately, the pool is not heated, so we were unable to use it. This was unfortunate, as the weather was sunny with temperatures in the low 20C's in the afternoon and the pool looked so inviting, but too cold for our blood. Maybe they could install solar panels in the future. However, we did use the whirlpool but not the Spa. The hotel also has tennis courts, a trampoline and a jogging track winding through the grounds.
The majority of staff were impeccable, friendly and helpful. However, we must mention Bikash, who was always very cheerful and helpful at the buffet breakfast. But a special mention has to go to Puja, Bikash and Suraj in the Club Lounge, for their excellent service, friendliness and attention to detail. They really looked after us and always with a smile.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Kathmandu and found the people to be very friendly. Definitely would recommend the Hyatt Regency as the place to stay with outstanding service, superb food, excellent amenities and set in a beautiful location. We will be back.
Be prepared for lots of dust and bumpy roads as they are in the process of widening the streets. Also many power cuts throughout the day, but the Hyatt obviously has a back up generator and the electricity is always back on within a few minutes. Hey, it's Kathmandu!
Definitely do the 1 hour mountain flight which takes in Mount Everest and The Himalayas. The views are absolutely magnificent and the trip can be booked from the hotel.
A Club Room facing the Boudhanath Stupa. Ours was on the 5th floor and relatively quiet.
