“Impacts of recession????”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2009

I have visited this hotel recently for a workshop. The hall given was among the oldest in the hotel. It looked gloomy and dingy so was the shared bathroom near it (pics included)which was shocking as It is one of the oldest and the most prestigious hotel in Nepal. breakfast was buffet and tasty but not with a huge choices. few times before I have had their buffet breakfast which had enormous choices even buffalo milk, yak cheese, goat cheese and what not. I think this is due to the recession. Anyway the breakfast good.bakery items specially the cookies and Blackforest cake are awesome. We had buffet lunch also with Nepali and Indian food moslty and few continental items . The food was tasty. the ordered to cook pasta was really very tasty. The hotel lobby is very impressive with heavy furnitures that prove its oldness. the hotel decor was slightly changed and gradually it is gaining the contemporary look. One of the staff with a badminton rackat kind of deivce and a spray 'preying' the mosquitoes and other insects in the lobby was really amusing.[ though there were few mosquitoes flying in our hall]The hotel is spread over 11 acre of land though the location area is really maddening but once you enter the hotel it is like in the different world.
The service was so-so, not prompt. The concerned persons tried their best but......The staff ( I read his name something Prabin KC) assigned to look after us during the workshop was really very nice and smily guy. thanks to him. he did his job perfectly . I can not review about their room service as I did not use it same for their rooms. though their room seem to be very good and so was the ensuit bathroom. It won't be fair to write anything about that. In overall, I found, may be due to the recesion, its level is slightly down than my previous visits.

Soaltee Crown in Kathmandu is beautifully and expansively located covering a huge area with good restaurants, a casino, and lush green gardens with a picturesque view of mountains in the background. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated with traditional woodwork. Its a pity that the combination of such a beautiful location and so much land under a prestigious hotel brand does not make up for some of the downsides of the hotel, which with a little more attention can be completely overhauled. First of all, the rooms in some wings are damp and dark which gives them a certain shabby feel. I stayed in June and since it was raining it was making it feel even more damp and gloomy. The room amenities such as toilets and showers needed a retouch and fixing and these were not looked into till I started staying in the room. The carpetings and upholstery didn't help the feel if not worsened. I felt that for the price I was paying I wasn't getting as comfortable an accomodation. I also felt that the hotel didn't utilize the acres of green it had under its wing properly as during my two weeks stay I didn't see much use of the outdoors other than to lounge around. The hotel can do so much better by organizing outdoor bar-b-q's, open air entertainments etc. This is especially needed for a hotel like Soaltee since it is a bit of a ride from the more happening areas of the city such as Thamel.
The plus sides of the hotel are its friendly staff who demonstrated a nack for personal attention and the wonderful restaurants, specially the Chinese restaurant it has under its roof. The other restaurants had great food too and so did room service.

This hotel has a lovely property , specially the sitting place at the entrance, the rooms are cozy, the conference rooms are one of the best boardroooms if you are having meeting for 10 - 25 persons, and can organise your bar b que dinner at the lawn, with lot of open space, it gives a wonderful experience for stay in kathmandu, though located 20 minutes from the main durbar road / patan area.

This a really great hotel, great room. The casino is just next door. Breakfast is great. Hotel staff is always smiling. Has great restaurants within the campus.

Never call the hotel and book. it is cheaper to make an online booking.

Overall a great place to stay. I would love to go back there again.

the soaltee of old and the current one is two different place. the earlier one had bukhara - the great indian restaurant and now it is not there and some shipshod replacement is there. earlier the alfresco italian restaurant was exhaustive and great now it is drab and average. rooms have been renovated but the casino has bad crowd and worse atmosphere and totallly drab interiors. the earlier days u needed to be dressed properly and use to remind of vegas now it projects itself as a den. the breakfast used to be elaborate now it is routine affair. people and serice are still great . the travel agency should not be trusted for religious purpose and better to take car from the valet as travel agents make u wait for 45 mins for the car whereas the valet gives instant service.
