For some reason Hotel Nana became the hotel my volunteering buddies and I chose to stay at in Thamel during the first 6 months of 2012 whenever we needed a night out. I think this was because it is cheap and centrally located. So I know this hotel reasonably well. It is only a brisk walk away from our favourite bars and restaurants so it was easy to stumble into our rooms at 12 or 1 or 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning.
The rooms are simple with typical hard foam Nepali mattresses. Bathrooms are plain with the occasional leaky toilet. The seat on some of them aren't even screwed on. Showers were a nightmare and rarely warm, never hot. Some mornings I didn't even brush my teeth due to the brown water coming out of the sink. The location is on one of the main streets in Thamel so there are always people walking and talking around. It is noisy throughout the night. Rooms aren't airconditioned so during the Summer months, we left our windows open to cool the rooms down, which made the nightly racket even less tolerable. Mosquitoes would plague the rooms in monsoon season as there are no nets on the windows. One evening, I came home late and found a family of cockroaches in my room. The staff kindly moved me to another room. Unfortunately, on inspection, I found another cockroach under the nightstand. I moved to a third room that was roach free that evening. By the end of my Nana visits, I was taking a can of mortein with me.
On the positive side, staff were always friendly and will actually let you in late at night, which some other hotels won't do. The rooftop balcony is argubly the most scenic in Thamel and was a great place to have afternoon beers on.
This is certainly not somewhere I would recommend even the cheapest most on-a-shoestring budget backpacker to stay in.
