Would definitely recommend this place. Stayed here 10 days in September and it was clean, tidy and good prices (make sure you haggle - ask for the price without the 'free' breakfast). Rooms were bright and beds were comfy. Bathrooms were small but always had hotwater, wifi always worked and the staff were incredibly nice and hassle free. Prices quoted for any tourist stuff seemed to correspond with other travel agencies out on the street and were always with reputable companies. This place would be perfect if it had a common room or lounge area or somewhere to meet other travellers. As it is, unless you pass them on the stairwell, it's not really a place to mingle.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms that overlook the religious shrine below - 5am bell ringing not great.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2011

My visit was 5 months ago. I was booked and confirmed into the Elbrus guest house but was brouht to the Avalon due to overbooking. At first not a bad choice considering the wunderful rooftop view, the quiet location, generally safe environment off Thamel on a backstreet and the simple but clean room with ensuite bathroom/toilet. Unfortunately the bed was full of bedbugs and I had to leave next day. The owner was quite helpful paying for the remedies (antihistamin and calamin lotion) and reduced the roomrate by more than half (at the end I did not pay anything,,). Even paid for tea and cake at the coffee shop next door. The breakfast was ok but when I saw afterwards where it had beed cooked I was shoked. Probably the worst kitchen I ever say on my trips. Judge yourself once you are there. Power was on only for 3-5 hours daily due to restrictions on the grid. A torch is essential of you want to find your way back at night. Staff was not very active and seemed quite bored to me. The nightguard was a very funny man and we had some good laughs with him. All in all not enuogh to keep me coming back. I saw the Elbrus at the end of my trip when back in Kathmandu. Much nicer place with big communal rooftop, clean kitchen and larger rooms. Same owners and management.
