I was in Nepal last summer and stayed at Kathmandu Guest House( just next door) initially. The later was suggested by my professor and yes it has pretty gardens and collections--but the rooms are not as pleasant. Later I moved into this hotel and the moment I was in I fall I love with it. This is the hotel I'm looking for and if i would ever open a hotel myself I would look upon it as a perfect model. It is small, authentic, friendly, and you're surrounded by seas of history. This is a place where stories are told through each decoration and picture on the wall, through the candles they light up every night, and everything is immersed in the aroma of nostalgia. Their staffs are among my favorite people in the world. You'll have a better even experience if you try to speak a little bit of Nepalese, they appreciate your efforts enormously. When it comes to the rooms, they're stylish with air conditioners, although not as large--but the BATHROOMs are the best you can get in Nepal. Breakfast also is very British (with lovely mango juice). I could go on forever for god's sake..
