“... made the wrong choice from the menu”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

This was my 2nd time in Thamel. Nine years ago I actually had my first experience with Thai food at this restaurant. Don't know what it was called at the time but the food I found was very good. So naturally I wanted to have a go at it again.
The garden places are still as inviting as they were 9 yeears ago, but we opted for a place inside. wanted to see how seating would be in the round room overlooking the garden.
That turned out to be a nice choice. The places in there are at low ables. You sit on the floor. A nice authentic touch. The food seems nice still but I made the mistake to want my curry with fried rice ... Apparently that is impossible and makes you get a all-in-one fried rice dish. So, I could not really enjoy the Thai food that I remember. A pity, but probably my own doing.

Nevertheless, other guests still got dishes I envied, so I still think this is a nice place to eat. Not cheap, but then again, you are in the middle of Thamel. Personnel could be more helpfull but all in all. I'll try again next time.

“Delicious”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

Great Thai food in Kathmandu. Also ate at their sister restaurant Third Eye (Indian) and that was great too.

“Tasted like authentic Thai food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012 via mobile

Yes, it is a bit expensive, Yes the staff is not that warm, but the food was very good. We had the paypaya salad, red and green curries. The favours were great, just spicy enough. Conclusion: if you like good Thai cuisine, go for it.

“Rat attack!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

Come here if you enjoy dining with multiple rats scuttling across the beams above your head while you dine. The hospitality here is GREAT; if you point out these uninvited and unhygienic guests to the staff, they will laugh in your face without doing anything about them.

Like most restaurants recommended by the Lonely Planet, Yin Yang Restaurant's food and service is mediocre, at best. We ordered the red and green curry, and it was nothing special and definitely not authentic. The only positive thing about our dining experience was how fast the food came out (but this was probably because we were the only people in the restaurant).

All in all, this was an extremely disappointing experience for us. There are definitely better places to dine in Kathmandu, especially considering how expensive Yin Yang Restaurant's food is.

“One of my most 'average' food experience - ever”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2012

OK. Let's start with the positive - a nice setting in the garden. But a garden is something you can get in many other restaurants and hotels in Thamel.

Otherwise, avoid it.
- the food is eatable/OK but nothing special. Even "bland" in a way. As a comparison, the quality is that of a cheap Thai/ Asian take-away in the Western world. And you end up paying about that price too, which for Nepal is very expensive: This was my highest bill in a restaurant Nepal and the one I enjoyed the least.

It should be taken off the list of the Lonely Planet recommended restaurant. You get so much better Thai food in any other big city.
