“A pleasantly surprising hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2014

The only reason I ended up in 1905 was for the yoga classes. I was tired and completely unimpressed by the mess called Kathmandu. I needed a way to relax and found an add for yoga classes. That morning, walking through the streets of Thamel, I was honestly expecting the worst.
So walking past the old bowling alley and through the trees that open to a little bridge that connects to this beautiful colonial house was such a pleasant surprise! It was as if I stepped out of Kathmandu chaos and into Kathmandu calm.
The yoga class was exactly what the doctor ordered. After that I had a lovely breakfast. I met amazing people who are still friends til today. And then I appeared at the Saturday's farmers' market which was a real treat! The month that I was in Nepal, I visited 1905 about 4 separate times... all times were amazing :)

1905 is a breather away from the overly touristy Thamel. Take the yoga classes, sit and enjoy the shoppers in the farmers' market, or simply sit, have tea and take in this beautiful restored house.

“Farmer's Market”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

We visited twice. We were enthralled with the Saturday morning farmer's market. It was just a delightful experience. All kinds of yummy food was for sale.

We returned later in the week and had lunch, which turned out to be a mixed bag. Service was slow. Some of the mains were great, but an ear wig crawled out of one of the dishes. When we gave it back to the waiter he handed it back to us and said "it's okay, there are no more bugs". We had to force them to take it back to the kitchen to replace it.

I so badly wanted this place to be wonderful, and we were so wowed on Saturday, only to be disappointed later.

“Lovely meal after yoga”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014 via mobile

After enjoying our Astanga yoga class we sat down to a lovely Nepalese vegetarian meal. A pity we were the only clients. Everything was magical. Thank you

“NOT LONG”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

… is how much longer I understand 1905 will be around. Set in a former palace guest house, 1905 is now best known for its Saturday farmers’ market. Every Saturday morning, the gardens are overwhelmed by expats snapping up everything from brie to vegetarian chili.

On a recent December evening, my wife and I made what is probably our final visit to 1905. While we are indeed destined to leave our Kathmandu home in the near future, the real reason this was most likely the end is the rumored development of a chain hotel that will supplant 1905 in the near future. Sadly, Nepal seems to be racing ahead without regard for its rich culture and storied history. Much has been lost. More will soon be gone…

On our prior visit to 1905 we sat outside on the pier that straddles the garden’s lily coated pond and listened to the song of the pond’s resident frogs. On this brisk December evening, we decided to take a place inside. As we came across the bridge leading to 1905’s front door, a waiter that had been lounging outside ran ahead of us. I can imagine him shouting “alert, alert, customers!”.

We took up a place in what was probably the old house’s original dining room. Our waiter, grinning from ear to ear passed us menus and returned shortly with a basket of bread. We started with a salad of fresh fruit and greens. We explained that we were going to split the salad and in a gesture we’ve come to value greatly, the waiter delivered the salad to the middle of the table and gave us each a plate. We didn’t have to ask.

We followed the salad with tenderloin steak topped with blue cheese and roasted pepper and pan seared chicken breast stuffed with herbed mozzarella. As we’ve come to expect from 1905, the steak was cooked to order, medium rare, and the chicken warm and tasty.

There are lots of restaurants in Kathmandu, but 1905 has some of the best food around. While the restaurant is clearly showing its age, 1905 is certainly worth a visit before its impending demise. Don’t miss it.
