“Unique narrow gauge mountain railway.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2012

This is an unusual railway and very rarely used by tourists. It runs from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar, though most trains terminate prior to that. It is a very busy railway and we crossed a lot of trains on the passing loops of the single track line. We caught the early train from JG and got window seats with no difficulty. About 20km down the line we had a 3 hours stop, more carriages were added and the train completely filled up. People were hanging out the doors over huge drops where the railway crossed rivers on viaducts. The 164km journey took around 10 hours - rather uncomfortable but we were rewarded with magnificent views including snow capped mountains. The journey cost less than 50 cents - it must be one of the cheapest journeys anywhere in the world.

“Darjeeling Himalayan Railway - Wonderful experience - railway fan or not!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2009

If you go to North Bengal make the effort to travel on the DHR affectionally known as the Toy Train. The route takes you from the plains up to the hill station of Darjeeling at an altitude of around 7,000ft The track runs alongside the main road and gives you a chance to see Himalayan life with breathtaking mountain views, tea gardens, delightful hill villages and towns, . There are times when you could reach out of the carriage window and tough the merchandise on the shop displays!. I loved the hand painted ads on buildings and lamp posts. Make sure you have your camera to record those memories. Enjoy!

“beautiful kalka shimla rail link”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2009

Although I have travelled on all the four mountain rail links,
including Pathankot Joginder nagar rail link, but most beautious
has been Kalka Shimla Stretch, It overpowers the technical feat
of tunnelling in the mountains at that time when it was purely
mannual not like Delhi metros drilling machine.
the second is Siliguri Darjling strech which is open and wide

“The Kangra Valley Railway -- a real, genuine non-touristy mountain railway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2009

This is one of the prettiest train rides you can ever take. There's a superb view of the Dhauladhar range all the way, plus you get to rub shoulders with (or even get sat on by) the local populace. This is a real train, catering to real people -- housewives, farmers, students, tradesmen, shepherds, business people. And the fares are real, too, starting at 15 bucks. No inflation here, although I believe there is a luxury train too, if you'd rather join the fleshpots. Running between Pathankot and Joginder Nagar several times a day, it goes through the most fascinating little villages in the Kangra Valley. It's not just a tourist attraction, though it could easily be one. It's so cute, any lover of trains will swoon all over it. It's not terribly clean, but who cares? Just stick your head out of the window and enjoy!
