We arrived at Hotel Motithang after dark. Check-in to the hotel was quick and our rooms were ready with the heater and geyser on.
The rooms were large, clean and very comfortably furnished. The washroom was also very clean and tidy. The heater was insufficient for the size of the room, and it got pretty cold in there. However they have a fireplace facility at an additional cost.
The hotel is located on a hillside, a good way above and away from Thimpu city, so your own transport is a MUST for getting around. When we didn't have our own transport, the manager Mrs. Sonam and her husband were kind enough to offer us lifts down to the city- a personal touch we highly appreciated. It is however very close to the Takin Reserve (a likely stop on your itinerary) and walking distance (about 30 minutes) to the Thimphu TV tower. The area is also very quiet and away from the hustle bustle of the city, and a nice place to retreat to after a long and busy day sightseeing. We were not bothered by the supposedly infamous barking dogs- neither here nor in any other part of Western Bhutan.
The staff at the hotel were very cheerful and courteous, and were on call whenever we needed them. It was an added bonus that the hotel was sparsely occupied at the time of our (Off season) visit. Mrs. Sonam also cooked up the best "Ema Datse" we had in Bhutan. That along with the rest of the food served at the hotel was very delicious and good value for money.
The most endearing memory of our stay was being invited by the Owner of the hotel Mr. Sangay Ngedup for their private New Years party at the hotel. The Traditional Singing and Dancing along with Karaoke followed by a Grand and Sumptuous Bhutanese Dinner was the most special way to start enter the New Year. That evening we were made to feel like Family in the typical Bhutanese fashion!
Our stay at the Motithang was one of the more eventful of our entire trip. We met some really nice and warm people there who made our stay very memorable. Also the building with it's mandatory traditional Bhutanese decor, the comfortable rooms and the excellent location away from the grind of the town, all sum up to making this hotel a "must-stay-at" on our next trip to Bhutan!
