“Typical Protea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2012

These hotels are well run and very disciplined. It was a pleasure to see Clara the GM working on reception and having a joke with her staff, what great respect shown and gained. My only 2 negative points were, the internet connection was a major problem from my room thus more a server problem I think and lastly the hotel time frame is short with everything so financially run that you see no wastage via the breakfast presentation, it all looks like the hotel save every single dime not to waste which is good but comes across stale and brittle. Anyhow that is nothing compared to the positive service I had and a charming team on reception. A well run Hotel.

Not a bad hotel for where you are. This was was my second visit to Lusaka and last time i stayed was in Taj around 4 years ago. This hotels definitely has better rooms and location but Taj as a hotel is bigger and more buzzing.

Good :

Descent rooms
Good toiletries
Breakfast is good
Location - next to shopping arcade with restaurants and bars

Bad
The air conditioner is average
Late night after the restaurant has closed you can't even get a bottle of water
Very dull ambience

Room Tip: If you are staying on the weekend then opt for higher floor rooms. I was there on the first floor fr...

I travelled to Lusaka with my partner for business in March for 3 nights. The hotel is in a great location, has clean rooms and mordern, agreeable decor. The quality of the mattresses is terrible!!! For a while I thought we had one of those old school beds suspended on chains until I lifted to check. The hotel staff, though very friendly, seemed to not have good communication amongst themselves as we received numerous irritating calls asking us to return the iron and ironing board we had returned earlier the previous day. All in all, good location, friendly staff, the food is not much to talk about and basically in need of uplifting the quality of sleep offered to guests.

I would easily give the Protea Hotel 4.4 stars. I stayed here for a few weeks while on business, and I was satisfied with the service and the state of the rooms.

The rooms are modern, and the bathrooms are rather large. All the rooms are the exact same (I was told), so there are no upgrades. The TV was old and there aren't many channels with clear reception. The toiletries are not name-brand, or, at least, not a name-brand I recognized. the service was friendly, and there are guards on every floor (not necessary, as Zambia is safe, but they're nice to have).

The best selling point for the Protea is its location. No other hotel in Lusaka (and I visited a lot while I was there) has such direct access to food and entertainment choices. Being connected to the Arcades means that I had easy access to the restaurants, movie theater, Spar, casino, and retail establishments. The Protea even has a side entrance that goes directly to the Arcades, though there is no elevator and just stairs. The InterCon or the Taj are in the middle of nowhere, and so while the standards are similar to the Protea, the food options in the immediate area definitely are NOT.

One negative is that there is a club beneath the Protea (located in the Arcades) that blasts music til all hours of the night, particularly on the weekend. Is not "noisy," per se, but you can definitely feel the bass. Because of that, I had my room switched from the 2nd floor to the 4th (top) floor. There are better views and the club music is minimal-to-nonexistent while the air conditioner is on. I would only stay on the 4th floor, as the 3rd floor is a smoking floor.

Overall, I would recommend staying at this Protea (there are two others in Lusaka, so be judicious) for its modernity and location.

Located about 20 minutes from the Airport, makes this an ideal lay - over hotel if you have to go through Lusaka. It's an oasis compared to Cairo Road hotels and certainly a lot cheaper than the 5 star hotels. It's clean and comfortable and the staff are courteous and a good breakfast is served in the restaurant. They offer a paid pick up service to and from the airport.

It's located adjacent to and has direct access to a shopping plaza that has several decent restaurants to choose from, so finding a good meal is very easy. The hotel restaurant is OK, but better fare can be found a short walk away.

You can't go wrong if you don't need to be in the centre of the city.

At $200 for a double, this is an excellent business hotel - located next to restaurants and shops. Friendly staff, clean rooms - all that is expected from a Protea!
Free internet and 1L of drinking water daily.
