Fang Fang family is a Chinese-owned and operated hotel, and the family is one of the oldest Chinese families in Uganda. The hotel is strange because it does not feel like one is in Africa, unless you need someone to do menial tasks e.g. get your bags or room-service, then you interact with Ugandans.
Most of the time at the reception, there are young Chinese girls, and most of them are impatient and rude to the Ugandan staff. Chinese are the new mean Asians in Africa.
It is true that the food at Fang Fang is superb, try the shrimp, chicken dishes and you will find they are some of the best Chinese food you have ever had. Yum. Staying at this hotel means delicious food. The location is also pretty good, close to the Sheraton and Kampala club.
However, there are definitely down-sides to the place. Rooms are dated, dark and dingey. I changed my room about five times before I settled on Room 205. So when you get there check that everything works: hote water (or water more generall), air con, TV and lights. Many of the rooms have one thing that is not working. And, Fang Fang does not have a technician on site. If you arrive late, know that there is no room service or telephones to call home - none of their phone have an international line. Quite ridiculous! They claim internet works, but they do not. Luckily, I had a MTN modem so I could connect quite easily the next day.
Fang Fang is a cheap option in an expensive city like Kampala. Would I want to stay there again? No way!
Chekc the rooms out BEFORE you settle on one.
