“Old and expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2014

The hotel is very positioned within Kampala. The rooms and especially the bathrooms need an urgent upgrade. You get a feeling of "Everything is Old" when walking into the room. The bar and restaurants are ok. The seafood restaurant is VERY good but expensive. Nice pool area. Over priced compared to other hotels in Kampala.

Room Tip: Order food quickly after arriving at restaurant. It takes long to prepare.

Thank you for your review Marius,

Sheraton Kampala is one of the oldest Internationally recognized hotels in the region and has stood as a landmark on the Kampala skyline for many decades. We have renovated several parts of the Hotel as well as opening up new outlets like the Seafood Restaurant (seven Seas) and the emphasis will now move to some of the rooms and bathrooms that require renovation.

We recently revised some of our room rate and I would encourage you to check out our website for great deals on the room rates.

Thank you.

Two of us came to Sheraton Kampala for work related reasons. The communal areas are really nice and have had investment (the restaurant, the bars, lobby etc.) and the food at the restaurants is very good. The large gym is also a huge asset. The rooms really need an update though (please start with the bathrooms, as these let the hotel down and can be deal-breakers for guests) and the music in the bar is too loud and goes on too late into the night. The mid-week management drinks were a really nice touch.

Room Tip: Request a room over looking the road, not the bar/outside restaurant

Dear Mr. Andrews, we greatly appreciate your feedback.

Our new General Manager has initiated several projects such as the mid week cocktail reception in order to gain better insight into what changes need to be made in order to continuously improve our Hotel.

As a result, over the coming months there will be various improvements including the internet speeds as well as the décor and as you mentioned - the bathrooms.

We sincerely hope you will stay with us again and look forward to hosting you.

Getting there depends very much on traffic but as a minimum you should anticipate 45 minutes from Airport. The Hotel is located on a small hill overlooking center of Kampala, security seems quite tight, requiring that guests and drivers undergo two separate scans and frisks, at entrance to hotel grounds and at the entrance to hotel.
Check in/out was moderately efficient and polite which in a nutshell probably summarises the entire stay.
The room ( Club floor single ) was relatively small and the bathroom very small, but with a large deep bath over which the shower is placed, if you are very elderly or your mobility is impaired the height of the step into the bath could present some challenges…I do not recall seeing one higher.
The bed was comfortable and the room was clean but showing signs of wear and tear and was dated in the décor, internet was patchy, as was the power supply, however it does have a backup generator which seemed to work OK.
As other contributors have noted, on one side ( garden ) it faces a club and particularly on lower floors the noise can be distracting if you are a light sleeper.
The club on 10th floor is adequate but certainly not lavish, but has quite a nice view over Kampala and the service was pleasant.
Ate at the restaurant outside both buffet and a la carte but would suggest maybe buffet is better….I think it will be many years before Mr. Michelin even visits Uganda, let alone considers stars, so do not expect culinary peaks….. and you will not be disappointed. Breakfast buffet is however pretty good.

I would probably stay here again.

At the end of the day you generally get what you pay for and in that regard at least for me given its location etc., it still represents value for money. I note that the average ranking in TA is 3.5 and that to me is reasonable representation, I struggled between giving this a 4 star given the challenges of Kampala etc, but there were just too many small glitches for the Sheraton brand to justify this.

Room Tip: Suggest you go for rooms that do not face the garden

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review and it is great that you would consider staying with us again.

The trip from the airport at the moment can be quite tedious as you intimated but as you may be aware, the new highway is under construction and will be completed soon, this will help ease the traffic coming in and out of the city.

We recently increased the internet bandwidth and in Q2 there are plans to install new routers that will greatly improve our internet speeds.

We appreciate your patronage and hope you will stay with us again.

Having decided that the first floor buffet has about as much atmosphere as the local morgue, we decided this time to eat in the à la carte restaurant on the ground floor outside terrace.

It was just about OK. My beef burger was quite stodgy and came with a huge amount of what looked like chopped peppers in a sauce. It was edible but nothing to write home about.

One dining companion had goat stew on a kebab and thought it was OK. Another dining companion had fish and chips and, likewise, thought it was OK.

The place wasn't cheap and I don't think the quality of the food we ate matched the price we paid.

Dear Guest, thank you for your feedback regarding the restaurants.

Victoria Restaurant located on the 1st floor is a very popular buffet restaurant and offers a great view into the gardens however on a windy day it can get a little bit cold in there.

It is unfortunate that your meal experience at Paradise Terrace was not the best and I would like to perhaps recommend that you try out our newest dinning experience: Seven Seas Seafood Restaurant which offers fresh catch like lobster, red snappers, prawn and salmon prepared to your preference. Their new expanded menu also includes beef steaks, grilled meat, pastas and vegetarian specialties!

We hope you will consider dinning here again.

Spent 18 nights here. As a Platinum SPG member, I got a suite on the 3rd floor. It was extremely nice, with brand new everything: furniture, bathroom, etc..

My colleague got a regular room and apparently it was pretty terrible (hence only 4 stars).

The reviews are pretty scary here (and if you're like me, you always read all the 1 stars), but if you get the right room, you will have a great experience.

The breakfast deserves a huge shout out, excellent food! Gym and pool are also great.

Room Tip: Try to get upgraded to a suite.

I was there for two days and was amazed that almost immediately, the hotel staff knew me by name. (No, I am not famous). Service was always immediately present and willing to assist or direct me whenever I looked like I needed it.
The food was terrific. The buffet had so many delicious and unique choices that it made you not want to leave. It was such a dramatic contrast to the rest of Uganda and the time I had spent in the bush that it felt like an oasis in Africa.
The pool was unique, the exercise equipment was in top condition, and the rooms were clean, well maintained and comfortable.
The grounds surrounding the hotel was one of the best amenities. It was like lounging in the midst of a large peaceful garden, a perfect place to unwind.
While the Sheraton maintained it's usual pricing, I felt it was well worth the expense and considering the restorative effect that it had on me, it was a pleasant bargain.

I'm very lucky to stay in many hotels around the world with my job but this has to be the worse ever. The rooms are so old and dirty. The curtains in my room are so old and they are full of holes which look like stars in the sky when it's daylight outside. The carpet is full of stains and the light fittings in the room are falling apart. The bathroom is old and tired and needs replacing, cracks in the sink. Toilet sprays water out when it's flushed. Had dinner in the restaurant and waited over an hr for my bill even after asking 3 people. Would I return. Never ......

Dear Guest,

We appreciate your feedback. Your points of concern are noted and we have discussed them with our responsible department heads. 75% of our floors have been renovated recently – for the other ones, we have a renovation plan in the pipeline, that consists of a full renovation of the bathrooms and part of the bedrooms, including the curtains.

We would be more than happy to show you the outcome of the renovations on your next visit to Kampala.

Best Regards,
