“Best deal in Kampala”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2012

I have been coming to Africa for many years now and have checked and stayed in so many places in Kampala that i find it hard to believe that you can get better value for money than Hotel Kenrock.. The most expensive rooms have a balcony, hot water, tv and you only pay the equivalent of 20 dollars and the cheaper rooms go for between 13 and 16 dollars .... The location is near an Italian supermarket and Uchumi( a big supermarket chain) is only 1200 shillings( 50 cent) on a boda boda (motorcycle). There is secure parking space if you come with your own transport and staff are very helpfull... There is a nice garden where you can have a variety of Indian, european and local dishes....It is easy to be critical and you can not compare a 20 dollar room to a 130 dollar room, but as an experienced Africa traveller i dare somebody to get me a better value for money in Kampala...

Room Tip: Take room 102, it has a balcony and a the back it is facing a garden.

We stayed there for two nights, before moving on to another hotel. Positive things are the location not too far from the city centre and Kabalagala. The rooms are big enough and clean. Mosquito net is provided, but had some small holes in it.

However, staff was total unfriendly, our reservation did not exist and we were given a smaller room than booked via email and the staff did not answer our question why and if there is also a bigger room available. Internet only worked in the restaurant nearby, neither in the lobby nor in the room. Stayed there on Friday and Saturday night and could not get a good sleep, as there was a party in one of the houses next door. So maybe do not stay there on the weekends.

Food in the restaurant is good for what you pay, but staff made us feel as we are a burden.

Considering the price, it might be okay for the value, but there are better options with a similar price in Kampala!

The hotel is in a good location, staff are helpful and flexible, they kept a piece of clothing for us which we had left behind on one of our many stays and remember to give it to us on our return. It is excellent value. Free wi-fi that works more often than most of Africa! Large rooms, Balcony rooms are nicest and worth the upgrade (wifi works better). Restaurants nearby I would recommend are the pizza place around the corner on your way into town. In a town of decidedly mixed options this one stands out.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms worth the upgrade

If you are looking for a budget hotel in Central (but not in town) Kampala, this hotel is a great option in terms of value for money. It is located in Muyenga, 100 metres away from the ‘Rest Corner’ where you have a supermarket, ATM, and some restaurants. Also the bars and shops in Kabalagala are at a walking distance.

I have been at Kenrock for nearly two months (yes, two months!) and it has been my home in Kampala. It has clean rooms, the area is quiet (unlike Kabalagala!!) and the most important thing: the staff are very nice and helpful, always ready to assist you.

Another good thing is that you have WI-FI internet, which is not so common here in Uganda. And there is a nice garden to have some drinks or meals or just check your emails.

I would highly recommend Kenrock either for a short or long stay in Kampala.

I am writing this review from the outdoor terrace at Hotel Kenrock on my fourth day in Kampala. This place is simply great value for money in a town with some very very expensive hotel options and not much at the value end that represents comfort.

On my first night in Kampala i was booked into the hotel next door (Chez Johnstons) and had a very bad nights sleep in a very dated and dirty room for 99,000 shillings. The next day i set out to find a more comfortable nest and thought i would check out the property next door.

You know you are onto a winner when you enquire at a front desk and are immediately presented with several keys to go and view the different categories of room available. I opted for 102 which is the biggest room in the hotel with a good size balcony at the back of the property. The bathroom is large with a separate shower enclosure. The room is very clean with good solid furniture, plenty of storage and above all else reliable quick in-room wifi. The price..... 41,000 shillings per night!! In UK terms this is under £15 per night including taxes!!

The resturant offers a variety of very good value meals and snacks, i have just finished a toasted egg sandwich and pot of coffee, the bill in front of me is 6000 shillings, less than £2!

Not much more i can add really other than to say this place is about 50 yards from the rest area with supermarket, atm, resturants and bars etc. This is my new home away from home in Kampala! Oh, and in case i forgot to mention, the staff are super super helpful! Spotted a couple of mosquitos in my room on the first night, informed reception and they sent someone up immediately to spray the entire room! For the price paid i have not experienced value like this anywhere during my extensive travels on this continent.
