“Lacking in charm and atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

You can always guarantee getting a room in this vast hotel but that it is the problem. It is too large to have any character. While the rooms are fine it is pricey and the restaurant and public spaces are devoid of any interest.

I stayed at the Imperial Royal for 4 nights recently, on a work trip. This was a conference and the hotel housed both the participants and the actual conference sessions. Hotel drops and pickups from/to the airport worked fine.

The hotel is enormous and seems largely empty. The rooms are vast - I mean truly /vast/ - with huge empty spaces between pieces of furniture, and the (large screen) TV so far away from the bed that my middle-aged eyes had trouble watching anything at all. Better furnishings and decor could have made having a large hotel room into a real treat, but it felt more like rattling around in a huge, dimly lit, slightly musty cavern - not at all inviting. The whole hotel consists of these large, mostly empty, poorly lit spaces - rooms, corridors, restaurant...

The rooms are clean enough, sheets and towels spotless, and a brilliant shower - plentiful hot water and good water pressure. The room key did stop working every now and again - trekking all the way down from the 7th or 8th or 9th floor is a bit of a pain. The service was terrible - people were nice enough but everything took a long, long, looooong time - from getting a sandwich to having the air conditioning fixed. Restaurant food was tolerable but not especially good.

The conference facilities were just fine, though - as others have said this hotel seems to cater more to meetings and conferences, with large numbers of people coming to events but not actually staying there. Seems well located although I didn't have much opportunity to see the rest of the city.

I would definitely /not/ choose to stay here again, especially if I were a tourist.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for having visited and stayed with us at the Imperial Royale Hotel!

We have noted your compliments with much thanks and promise that we shall work on the flaws that could have inconvenienced your stay.

The key card system of the hotel is electronically controlled and its the same key that controls the lighting of your room, the television and the air conditioning. After opening your room, slot the key card on the right upper lane, its just right next to the switches, once slotted in the lights,Television and air conditioning will automatically turn on. You can then manually switch off whatever you may not need at that moment..if the key is removed from the key card slot then you will have to manually switch on the lighting, air conditioning and the Television. Note if and when the key card is placed near a mobile handset it demagnetizes the encoding. Always feel free to dial the intercom and request for assistance to avoid the hussle of moving up and down the lifts.

We have various room categories that can best meet individual needs with different desires. We take very much interest to cater for the disability. Guests are free to choose a room of their category, choice and convenience.

The Imperial Royale Hotel is a convention center and hence hosts several workshops and Conference on a daily basis. Thats why you noticed that there were sevral meetings with large numbers.

We will be humbled to host you again as a repeat guest and your feedback is most appreciated.

The Imperial Royale is well situated and massive in size.
Its a function hotel and so has many conferences.
The rooms are very large
Its western and comfortable - but you wouldn't say authentic african if thats what your looking for.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with good light - the rooms can be dark

Big lavish hotel, big rooms with big bathrooms. Some rooms are very well furnished... some appear rather spartan. perfect location in Kampala... However there is a foul smell through out the hotel... i think they need to rip out the carpets..i have stayed there over time, and with every visit i feel a standards are going lower and lower... restaurant is not too bad, but dinner may be a problem, i once ordered something and was not sure is it was fish or chicken....

The hotel is conveniently located in central Kampala. It looks very impressive and elegant both from the outside and even once inside the actual hotel. The hospitality is very good and the service level is high. The rooms are large and the furniture stylish seams to have high class but then when you examine a little closer, you discover that both hotel rooms and furnishings are a bit worn and frayed. Basically, we were very pleased.

Looking through the reviews here a lot of people are getting the Imperial Royale and the grand Imperial hotels mixed up. I stayed here traveling alone a year ago while doing work with a group at makere University. The rooms were large, I found the staff friendly. For 2 mornings we had no hot water in the bathrooms for showers, but it was usually good by evening. The hotel was empty most of the time for the week I was there probably less than 30 people were staying at this huge hotel. I spend most of my time not at the University working with the rest of my group who were staying across the street at the Serena. I found the breakfast service to be good, however if you did not ask your server you would not have known what was available. I had dinner one night in the restaurant It was a good chicken dish and reasonably priced. On my last day I asked the tour desk in the lobby about tours and they provided me with a private guide who drove me to all the spots in the city for about $80 I was very happy with the guide and my tour was much better than my friends who took some type of a group tour from the Serena.

Stayed for just over a week for work and part holiday. Staff not helpful and room had bugs. Gym good, food average, rooms large. Main business is in providing conference facilities. Not really for tourists.
