“Perfect in every way!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

I have stayed in Acropole hotel for 2 weeks during Xmas of 2011.

It was an excellent experience.

The rooms are great, the food was perfect , it was like eating at home, the staff is as friendly and helpful as it can be.

The main advantage is that, things like travel permits, photo permits, air tickets, excursions in other areas of Sudan, where all taken care of by the owners and managers of the hotel.

And this is really important in a country like Sudan , which is very beautiful, but has its own rules.

We spent 2 weeks is Sudan, and we realy enjoyed the city Khartoum, and we have also enjoyed 3 wonderfull excursions all perfectly organised by the hotel.

Exactly the service you need when you visit Sudan!

It really outclasses many 5 star hotels!!

I have stayed here a number of times and would not stay anywhere else. The buildings and decor are a bit old fashioned but well looked after and have all the necessary amenities. It is dark but that is no bad think when the sun is blazing and it is 40+C outside. The thing that makes it stand out is the service, it almost like having a branch of you own business there. From dealing with police registration to confirming flights AND following up on a flight that was rescheduled George and his team take the hassle out of dealing with a country where English is not widely spoken and the level of customer service is not high. The tour mentioned elsewhere is worth doing and I say that after having previously lived in Khartoum for a year. There are managers froma couple of chain hotels I have stayed that I would love to bring here to see what customer service really means!!

I thought it was a bit expensive for a 3 star hotel compared to other 3 stars. Simple rooms but had all the necessary amenities. It was a bit dark and it gave it a gloomy effect.
Good location

I have just returned from Khartoum, where I stayed for 2 weeks at the Acropole. It was really what I had read previously: a 3 star hotel with a 5 star service!
The rooms are simple, but you have all you need (A/C and fan, refrigerator, fast wireless access everywhere, satellite TV, iron, hairdryer); the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, the food is really good, the service is wonderful, the city tour on friday is really great (and free for guests) and the management really takes care of you and makes you feel at home and among friends (with a very special touch from George). Really, the best!
The neighbourhood is also quiet and you're very close to some good souvenir shops, if you're interested in those - or you might check the great stuff the gentleman sells at the entrance of the hotel has, to get some really unusual gifts.

I'd like to make it clear that I didn't stay at the Acropole, we simply went on their City Tour on a Friday evening.
My Dad is currently working in Sudan and we visited him for a week in March (staying with him in his apartment) however we came across the Acropole's city tour online before we flew out, and Dad was able to set it up with the owners for the week that we were there.
And what a great tour it was!!
A good 3 hours long, we visited both the National and Republican Palace Museum, the Blue Nile Sailing Club as well as a fort on the other side of the Nile in Omdurman. We then went onto Mahdi's Tomb and thanks to the guide were even able to go inside to have a look round.
Then a quick drive through the Souk in Omdurman and we drove onto what was seemingly a graveyard but which led us to a celebration taking place outside a Mosque, this was the Dervish Dancing at Al Nil Tomb, and this it has to be said was a highlight not only of the tour but of our entire trip!
A quick cup of tea with our guides at a tea stall and then we headed back to the Acropole to be dropped off.

Overall, a fantastic tour and if you're staying at the Acropole it should be an absolute MUST.

I dont give 5 points only because smoking is still allowed in the small loby and restaurant and there is no option left for the non smokers. Otherwise this old fasion , family run hotel is a phenomenon. The 3 Greek, Pagoulatos brothers, and especially George, should be invided by Universities and other training institutions around the world, to teach the hoteliers how the hotel service can reach the skies.Personal service, solutions to any difficulty, far beyond a hotel is obliged to provide, homely cooked food ,friendly family style suround. You forget your room has no window .or there no shampoo and shoer gel in the bath.Is more like a visit to relatives but with professional responsibility.Dont come here if you are looking for glamour or you want to impres your local partner. Acropole is a "center" for travelers, journalists , archeologists and people who are looking to discover Sudan,Thank George, Thanassis and Makis.!!

Room Tip: Ask George what you want

On the basis of Trip Adviser reviews, my brother and me chose the Acropole to stay in for a tourist visit to Khartoum, revisiting places we had known as children and later. Everything the earlier reviewers say is true - George, the owner, and his family and staff are exceptionally welcoming and helpful and there is a real feel of personal interest. It's comfortable and well equipped without being glitzy and the food is good. I was slightly unwell for a day or so and was looked after with tea-and-toast and appropriate solicitousness. The issue of money and payment, not straightforward with currnet financial sanctions, was handled extremely efficiently and helpfully. Other guests were interesting too! Can't recommend highly enough.
