Hotel Mariam, is a well established property located a stones throw from Lumley beach. Several improvements and renovations have been done over the past few years and the place is in ok shape. To me, it has a Sierra Leonean charm despite the service not being the best, at times even bordering rude or indifferent - This is the case in most hotels in Sierra Leone, except in the other places you pay big money, in Hotel Mariam you don't.
The cost per night is acceptable in relation to the service you get according to the Freetown "gold standard". Again, as I say in most of my SL hotel review - the rooms are always over-priced and the service below par regardless of where you stay. The same goes here, at least they don't bleed you out completely.
Rooms are very basic with locally made furniture. They are clean, but don't expect much more.
Enjoy a walk to Lumley beach while you stay here. If you are not used to Sierra Leone it can be a bit intimidating at first to walk because this is a local neighborhood. People are generally friendly so indulge in some local culture while you are at it.
