“The calm within the storm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2009

I booked at Farid based on the positive reviews that i saw on this page. After two weeks there I highly recommend it. If you are using a Lonely Planet guide you will find that the Hotel Farid is in walking distance from quite a few points of interest (Sandaga Market, Marche Kermel, the boat to Goree Island, etc.) I'll just run down some basic points. The front desk staff is quite helpful and speak French, Spanish and a bit of English. They'll work with you and help you navigate Dakar which is a bit overwhelming at first. The establishment is very clean. They have a large staff cleaning everything, including the the sidewalk, every morning. My room had cable television with spanish, english, french, arabic and wolof programming. It seemed that most rooms had balconies. If you can, request one overlooking Rue Vincens, as it gives a nice view of the hustle and bustle of the city. The entrance opens on to Rue Vincens which isn't the greatest of streets but i never felt unsafe. At night there's hardly anyone around but in the day you will have to deal with beggars and the like. The Restaurant Farid is very good but on the costlier side. Once you're settled go right to the corner and eat at Keur Ndeye which has fantastic Senegalese dishes for about $4-6USD. There is a business center with one computer on the first floor but if you travel with a laptop they provide complimentary internet access in the rooms. The mini bar in the room has items that cost the same as if you bought them outside of the hotel. Breakfast at the Restaurant is $7USD. Get your bearings and eat at a tangana. You'll get the same breakfast for $1USD.

The only thing that threw me about the hotel was the reservation process. I'm accustomed to internet booking and they do it by email correspondence. So, they don't take any information except your name once you've negotiated price, etc. I was concerned but once i showed up they just looked at their copy of the printed email to confirm.

Finally, if you book with them arrange cab service from the airport. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with the hustling cabbies at Dakar airport. If you don't remember to do that, its ok. However, refuse to pay any more than 5000 CFA ($10USD, EU8) for the ride from the airport to the hotel. Ok? Good. Enjoy!

Dakar's reputation goes before it. Booking an independent hotel was a risk that I took on the strength of previous reviews. They were right.

The Farid's location does not initially inspire - on a busy narrow central Dakar street.

But the room was spacious, well kept, with good quality air conditioning, TV and bathroom, and a recent renovation.

The hotel restuarant is one of the best in the country. Go there even if you are not staying in the hotel. And if you are, don't think of eating elsewhere.

And all this at a price way way below what you should expect to pay in a capital city pretty well anywhere.

Terrific!

Stayed here for a week-long workshop in Dakar. I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms - the sheets were washed every day. I arrived at 5 am and they gave me a room, even though check in wasn't until the afternoon. The internet in the superior rooms was excellent- even better than mine at home. The room was well-kept. My only complaint about it is that they put me in a room on the first floor, and the echo of the TV that the desk guys watch at night was pretty loud. That's what earplugs are for. Also, the shower did not have the mounting for the wand, so you had to shower holding it. But on my last day, they actually replaced it, even though I hadn't complained. One note - I thought the breakfast was included in the room rate, but it's not. And is a little pricey for a few pieces of bread.
The hotel is very convenient to lots of restaurants and things downtown, but it is in the sketchier part of downtown, so be careful as you walk around. I never felt unsafe, but there are a lot of people out on the streets, trying to sell you things, etc... Despite this though, it's very quiet.

The Hotel Farid is good value in central-ville (city center) Dakar just a couple blocks from Place de l’Independance and an easy walk to the Dakar-Ile de Goree ferry terminal.
We concur with other reviewers who describe clean, basic but spacious rooms. In addition, complimentary Internet access is a major convenience – oh, yes! Friendly multi-lingual staff and an excellent Lebanese restaurant are this hotel’s distinguishing qualities. The restaurant is temporarily located across the street in a pleasing walled garden setting while the in-hotel facility is renovated.

  • Liked — Friendly, helpful staff.
  • Disliked — Rooms, while clean and comfortable, are drab.

We stayed Hotel Farid in Dakar for almost a week in the summer of 2006. Dakar is a difficult city to get used for somebody who has not visited Africa before. Hotel Farid was like our home away from our home.

The reception area is very small, and kind of misleading. But once we took the elevator, everything was much better. The staff was really nice and friendly. They gave us a lot of good tips on what to do, where to go, when to go, where to eat, etc. The man who worked in the reception was great.

Our room was on the top floor, with a queen sized bed, air conditioning, wireless internet and tv. We could watch many international channels in French and in English. The rooms were cleaned and the towels were changed everyday.

The restaurant was closed when we were there, only served some dishes to hotel clients. So we did not get a change to enjoy the full menu. Overall, we were really happy with Hotel Farid, and we would definitely go back.

This hotel is a good choice if you look value for money. Don't expect luxury here. Rooms are very basic, bathrooms as well. But they are clean, roomy, and the staff is great, very friendly and available to help.
The hotel is owned by Lebanese expats, and you can see it in the delicious Farid restaurant, which offers you Lebanese delicacies you should try.
The continental breakfast was nice, with coffee, hot milk (or tea), french bread, butter and jam plus croissant.
A good hotel if you are on the cheap side and want a very central location. And, indeed, Dakar doesn't offer many better hotels.

  • Liked — The staff.
  • Disliked — The lack of decor.
