I booked at Farid based on the positive reviews that i saw on this page. After two weeks there I highly recommend it. If you are using a Lonely Planet guide you will find that the Hotel Farid is in walking distance from quite a few points of interest (Sandaga Market, Marche Kermel, the boat to Goree Island, etc.) I'll just run down some basic points. The front desk staff is quite helpful and speak French, Spanish and a bit of English. They'll work with you and help you navigate Dakar which is a bit overwhelming at first. The establishment is very clean. They have a large staff cleaning everything, including the the sidewalk, every morning. My room had cable television with spanish, english, french, arabic and wolof programming. It seemed that most rooms had balconies. If you can, request one overlooking Rue Vincens, as it gives a nice view of the hustle and bustle of the city. The entrance opens on to Rue Vincens which isn't the greatest of streets but i never felt unsafe. At night there's hardly anyone around but in the day you will have to deal with beggars and the like. The Restaurant Farid is very good but on the costlier side. Once you're settled go right to the corner and eat at Keur Ndeye which has fantastic Senegalese dishes for about $4-6USD. There is a business center with one computer on the first floor but if you travel with a laptop they provide complimentary internet access in the rooms. The mini bar in the room has items that cost the same as if you bought them outside of the hotel. Breakfast at the Restaurant is $7USD. Get your bearings and eat at a tangana. You'll get the same breakfast for $1USD.
The only thing that threw me about the hotel was the reservation process. I'm accustomed to internet booking and they do it by email correspondence. So, they don't take any information except your name once you've negotiated price, etc. I was concerned but once i showed up they just looked at their copy of the printed email to confirm.
Finally, if you book with them arrange cab service from the airport. Save yourself the hassle of dealing with the hustling cabbies at Dakar airport. If you don't remember to do that, its ok. However, refuse to pay any more than 5000 CFA ($10USD, EU8) for the ride from the airport to the hotel. Ok? Good. Enjoy!
