“The food was good, but....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

The expression 'damning by faint praise' comes to mind with this hotel! Yes it's less expensive than others, yes it's near the market and close enough to the centre, yes the WiFi works in your room, yes the restaurant serves reasonably priced food for dinner and has an edible breakfast, yes the staff speak sufficient english, yes the rooms are clean enough (just) yes, yes, yes, but why not have staff that have some professional attitude towards the guests? Why not have a chef who actually whisks the eggs when he makes an omelet, rather than just crack 2 eggs into a cup, show a fork to them and then dump it in a pool of fat on a frying pan. Am I being too 'picky' here? Probably. It might have helped matters if the front staff hadn't spoken incredibly rudely about my wife in their local language, Wolof, assuming that she didn't understand when in fact she speaks the language fluently. This is a bad attitude and colours my view of the hotel. On a more objective note, I'd not recommend this area for those who don't know Dakar well or who are generally nervous about walking around African cities at night. During the day it's fine but once it's dark, and the market traders are all gone home, it's not really a place most WASP's would walk about in at ease, particularly if you don't speak French, or Wolof! Will I stay there again? No. I'll go back to the area where the IBIS hotel is. It's more expensive, by a small margin really, but is much more pleasant as well as being a better and safer walk back from the centre.

Quite a decent place and can lay claim to having one of the best restaurants in town too. Conveniently located and reasonably priced too. Rooms - neat and clean. friendly staff and multilingual too- english, spanish, French etc. Can organise for late night airport pick ups and other such arrangements.

We had an excellent time staying at the Hotel Farid. The staff were very friendly and could not have been more helpful. On arrival our experience of Dakar airport was so painless, contrary to expectations, I'm not sure whether arranging the hotel transit was strictly necessary but it certainly made things more straightforward. The hotel is well situated, has a bureau de change right opposite, and the Lebanese restaurant over the road was superb. We'd certainly stay here again.

I heard a lot about the reviews & decided to try on night.nthe price is cheap at $60 for dakar but the service is also cheap.
Had a chap at the reception who Seemed the most inhospitable person I have ever seen. Harly any one staying there & I don't wonder why. I hope the owner reads & changes the chap sitting there. I was give a room 10 & the room stinks & the ac does not work called the guy & he said be patient. Requested to chnage my room & he had no answer.
Thank god I am staying here just for the night.
I will never ever come here again & will not recommend this place to anyone.

We stayed here three times last year, over a two week period. Excellent mid-class option. Lobby staff are really friendly and helpful. We initially arrived late in the night, like 3 or 4 a.m., without incident: after ringing a bell, someone opened the door and checked us in.

Clean rooms, well organized, no complaints.

On our last visit, they were just about fully booked and so we had no choice but to take one of their older rooms. These are definitely to be avoided if possible: ask in advance for one that has been renovated and you’ll be much more comfortable.

I recently spent nine nights with a couple friends at this hotel while on an extended stay in Dakar. Overall, a fine affordable option in a solid location...

- Convenient location in the heart of the city: Walking distance from many restaurants and cafes as well as the shore. Conveniences on the block such as a small supermarket and dry-cleaning services (albeit a bit aggressively priced)
- Quality restaurant with great outdoor terrace: Enjoyed the hotel's Lebanese restaurant across the street from the hotel itself. Good food in a great setting to sit outside in the evening.
- Great internet: Quite fast, dependable, free wi-fi connection
- Interesting clientele: A mix of middle-age plus European tourists as well as some other guests who appeared to have a significant number of female visitors...
- Friendly service: Staff at reception was always quite friendly (especially in French)
- Unexceptional rooms: Rooms were clean but nothing to get excited about. Probably comparable to private rooms in many better-quality hostels: reasonable beds and linens, functional shower & bath....nothing to get excited about, but also nothing to inconvenience you

If you are looking for a "reasonable base" at a reasonable price in Dakar, this place works just fine. It's not a destination in itself - simply does the job and allows you to enjoy the rest of your trip in this fascinating city. There are cheaper options as well as more expensive options....this middle of the road one is likely "just right" if you know what you are looking for.

I stayed at the Hotel Farid for four nights, but not consecutively. I returned. The desk staff remembered me and were friendly as puppies. They helped me out of some difficult situations (getting a cab, finding my way around town, getting rid of pesky vendors), and were always ready with a chat or advise.

Yes, the "basic" rooms could use a paint job. Yes, they lacked screens. (This seems to be a problem all over the country! This is mosquito land! Yet screens are universally unknown.) But even the basic rooms have hot water, air conditioning and a balcony. The hotel is centrally located, and known to many (but not all!) taxi drivers.

I recommend it to mid-budget travelers, who want a good night's sleep, and a helpful staff. I did have to fiddle with the room lock a bit, but it worked.

Room Tip: If you ask for the BUDGET rooms, you get the ones like I had. The more expensive ones have been rece...
