“Hotel P du M: Great Introduction to Senegal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2010

Hotel P du M is a great little hotel which offers a highly qualitative sense of customer service along with its convenient location and affordable pricing. Located very close to Yoff International Airport, financial services, nightlife, shopping centres, statue, lighthouse, taxis, autogare, and beaches, Hotel P du M is only 20 minutes ride from downtown and the ferry terminal for Goree Island and Casamance. The ambiance is cool and cozy. The food is delicious. The hotel is clean. The pricing is mid range. Eric is fluent in both French and English and his advice about Senegal is accurate and useful. The owner-operators, Eric and Fabrice, are captains of a tight ship with a fun crew. The staff are helpful and personable. The overall feeling of Hotel Phare du Mamelles is of a nice family and I look forward to staying there again.

Nice small hotel with a very nice and friendly staff, a good food and nice room. In a nice and quiet neighborhood. A place where you are happy to return after your day.

I stayed there for 1 week, and it was very great. Very friendly and always smiling staff, good rooms, excellent food for reasonable prices.
And the best of all, Mr. Erik, as he said speaking 11 languages and always willing and never tired for a chat and answering my questions about everything.
The patio is a place to be for hours with comfortable sofa's.
Hotel du Phare, my and your place to be.

Arrived tired after a hot journey from southern Senegal and just a bit nervous as I was about to go into the solo part of my trip. The dynamique and super friendly young women who work at this special gem of a small hotel made me feel so welcome. I was immediately at ease sitting in a comfortable sofa in the colourful patio/bar/eating space with a cool glass of juice. I had a spacious en-suite room - very clean and comfortable with a desk for that all important travel diary; never mind the free internet access for guests. The menu was excellent and the cooking fresh and its fine to wait for the very tasty, cooked-to-order food as the whole ambience is so friendly.

Great location for the airport, a beach 5 mins away, taxi outside the door, or cheaper at the end of the street, where you also find handy bus route, local shops, pharmacy, and its a pleasant drive to the city centre. The staff are great at advice for local sights and there is an extensive range of trips available. I was really at ease and happy to be in such a comfortable space. I am looking forward to the return trip! Thanks so much to the owner, Michelin, the manager, Eric, and all the fantastice staff!

At the time we were traveling 10,000 CFA = approx. 15 Euros.

We stayed at Hotel du Pharr for the first three days of our travel and it was so pleasant, that we also spent our last two nights there. Eric and his Team keep a clean inexpensive small hotel (10 rooms) that has a very warm atmosphere. The prices for food and drink are moderate; meals range between 4,000 – 8,000 CFA (and as we later learned, if it’s not on the menu, ask… they’ll try and arrange it, and in our case they did with giant whole Lobsters)!! The food is very good and there are no worries about catching anything. They have a small comfortable bar where some locals and expat’s gather, which makes for an interesting evening. The beer (local) cost 1,500 CFA and Heineken 3,000. They also offer Whiskey, Rum, Baileys and a few other “schnapps”.

I highly recommend the Hotel du Pharr to any and all visitors to Dakar. Erik (who speaks Belgian, French, German and English) is very helpful for those planning their trip once they arrive. It is very worthwhile to take his advice seeing that he’s been living there for 15 years (as I recall).

The food was delicious. The owner is Belgian and has high standards for quality of food.

They tried to overcharge me. I had pre-paid 10% upfront a few weeks beforehand to reserve the room, which they did not recognize - until I showed them an invoice that listed the balance due. Then they tried to tack on a 6,000 CFA / night tax, which I also squashed since the invoice stated that all taxes and fees were already included. Left a very bad taste in my mouth, it took more than 30 minutes to straighten this out.

Typical hostel bathroom, typical hostel room.

By the way, I had pre-arranged with the hostel that a car would pick me up at the aiport - but it never arrived. I had never been so scared in my life, it was 11:00 PM in Africa and it was DARK - wandering around the arrivals greeting area for 25 minutes looking for a sign with my name, trying to ignore the 500 hissing Senegalese gypsy cab drivers. When I had finally resigned myself to acknowledging that my taxi was not there and would never come - I realized that I didnt know the address of the hostel or even the exact name. Scary!

After staying in Hotel du Phare Les Mamelles, I strongly recommend this accommodation to anyone who seeks a midprice hotel in Dakar. We booked room online and pick up from the airport, which is only ten minutes drive away. The hotel is colourfully painted, the proprietor Eric and the staff are all very friendly, the food is good. We returned to the hotel two times, after touring Senegal and Mali, and were greeted warmly each time. We preferred to stay in the fresh air outside the polluted and noisy city, which is not far away, anyway.
