“Goree Island was the best day of our Dakar trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Take the ferry to Goree Island and plan to spend the day.... it's charming and the Maison des Esclaves is a must see. The guides who offer their services overcharge and their 'tour' will be very short.... negotiate a price before you accept their offer.

“Ferry ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2014

This historical island reminds us of man inhumanity to man. The island has been well preserved and taken care of. The people are friendly and overly eager to sell you stuff. It's a lovely place that's recommended for everyone visiting Dakar.

“Powerful and Intense”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2014

It was not what I expected because I imagined it bigger and with a more interesting museum, but when I heard all the story about it and how many people were literally stored in those small rooms I couldn't believe it. Hearing or reading it and seeing it are so much different, not only the number of people but how they used to treat and select them. When you get to the door of no return and stand there, you can understand and feel why it has this name. Very powerful and emotional moment, sometimes ruined buy the noise made by the tourists around waiting to feel the same or at least get their photographs. You just want to freeze time and everything around so you can feel it. It is a shame that the museum upstairs is not that complete, mainly made of writings and drawings showing how it was and some basic information a normal person reads about slavery before going there. I recommend to go to the house before 12pm. It is less crowed and you have time to "enjoy" it and spend the rest of the day enjoying the island while people are still visiting it.

“Too Many Hustlers Spoil The Attraction!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2014

My trip to Goree as part of my DakArt and Saint Louis Jazz Festival tour was an emotional one. I had read about it but was not prepared for the tears I almost could not contain. This is the story of my ancestors, and their last experience in their homeland. I had a wonderful tour guide, and enjoyed walking around the island. However, the experience was lessened by the venders who tried to hustle you at every turn. Much too aggressive for my taste. The museum fell short of information and the museum director seemed bothered that we were asking questions. Had lunch at a great restaurant, where instead of viewing the ocean over lunch, we viewed venders hustling their wears. Glad to have seen "the door of no return".
