We stayed five nights at the Sofitel Dakar in December of 2006.
Although the desk staff is pleasant, you are disappointed constantly after checking in. The rooms are rather worn looking with few amenities. The mini-bars have nothing in them, not even water. We were told every day that it would be filled, but never was. The restaurant, has some interesting versions of Sengalese cuisine, but service is clumsy and awkward with prices, that should warrant better. The breakfast buffet was mediocre in quality and outrageously priced considering that.
The hotel offers an airport shuttle service which got us to the airport late and we missed our flight. Trapped in Dakar for another day, we didn't have the energy to deal with the crowd of hustlers and pickpockets that linger on the curbside in front of the hotel. ( Always take a taxi when you leave ) We hung out by the pool, which is across the road from the hotel, with very uninspired and dull service. We have been told this is the only decent option of hotels in Dakar. If that is true, then I would advise picking another destination altogether. This hotel is definitely not worth the price and Dakar itself is not interesting enough to cope with all the problems.

Dakar has a few acceptable hotels. Meridien is far away and boring, Teranga is located in centre town, that's great, but that's the only value for your money.
I had a room for 145 euro with windows not cleaned. Bathtub didn't empty. Staff didn't show up.
In my absence, hotel staff opened an envelope marked confidential in my room. I demanded explanation (the envelope consituted a security danger), and after that, I understood that courtesy is reserved for business travelers taller than 1.80 meter and wearing all signs of their status.
Go to the Savana hotel, get more value for money. And you'll see that hotels can be efficient, friendly, and clean. I am sure that a complaint such as an opened envelope would have had consequences in Savana.

This hotel is not deserving of the sofitel name. Stayed 2 nights for work and this is my opinion of the hotel

Check in was fast and got room right away. My room was on the street side and you can hear cars and traffic. The rooms on the water side are nicer but they would not move me to the quiter side.

ROOMS: the rooms were very outdated and old and worn looking. The bed was very hard and sheets old. The bathroom in both of my rooms had mold on tiles and rust in tub. the television only had 2 news channels that were in english and no option for pay movies. Refigerator in room but have to ask for key.

The hotel has no coffee maker in room and no fitness center and when asked where to run near hotel was told not safe. The pool is nice and options to eat by the pool.

When I got home from the hotel I had bites on my hand and leg went to the doctor and was told bed bugs.BRING LYSOL to hotel and spray everything. Would not recomend this hotel but in Senegal might be only option.

In November 2006 we stayed 3 times at the Sofitel.

The people at the check in are truly friendly. The rooms are okay -but need soon some overhaul. Air condition is very important in this part of the world and was working fine. The breakfast is okay but not outstanding. The restaurant was bad and we recommend to look for the nice French restaurant in the Pompedou street instead. The bar is nice and lively (in our case too much when there were about 50 or more motorcycle people from France waiting for their flight).

The location is great but do not walk alone in the night on the square and to Pompedou street. Always take a taxi. We tried on foot and were tree times agressively hassled - nothing happened though because we were shouting them away.

Overall this is a good hotel but too expensive for what you get. On the other hand there seems not to be too much competition and therefore not much choice. Do not expect a five star hotel of European or US standards and you will be fine.

The hotel is well located in the business center and has a beautiful sea view. The swimming pool is great with a nice restaurant.

The service at the hotel is good, but it can be better. The only problem for me at the hotel was the fact they have one restaurant in all of the hotel and it is not that easy to find others in Dakar at night.

The price is high. A corporate rate in the high season is about USD 200.00 which quite expensive for this area but I guess you have to pay if you want to get such service in this part of the world.

Visist Isle De Gore which is really nice and has good history about that country and its tribes.

Last, enjoy Dakar and its beaches. It is probably the only memory you will have of this country.
