We stayed five nights at the Sofitel Dakar in December of 2006.
Although the desk staff is pleasant, you are disappointed constantly after checking in. The rooms are rather worn looking with few amenities. The mini-bars have nothing in them, not even water. We were told every day that it would be filled, but never was. The restaurant, has some interesting versions of Sengalese cuisine, but service is clumsy and awkward with prices, that should warrant better. The breakfast buffet was mediocre in quality and outrageously priced considering that.
The hotel offers an airport shuttle service which got us to the airport late and we missed our flight. Trapped in Dakar for another day, we didn't have the energy to deal with the crowd of hustlers and pickpockets that linger on the curbside in front of the hotel. ( Always take a taxi when you leave ) We hung out by the pool, which is across the road from the hotel, with very uninspired and dull service. We have been told this is the only decent option of hotels in Dakar. If that is true, then I would advise picking another destination altogether. This hotel is definitely not worth the price and Dakar itself is not interesting enough to cope with all the problems.
