“An ok hotel in Kigali”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

Stayed for 3 nights at this hotel recently during a business trip.

The food is average, but the staff make up for that - they are really friendly and will do what they can to help. Breakfast is a small buffet of fruit, cereals, cheeses and cold meats, bread and pastries and a small selection of hot food ( beans, omelettes etc.). Quite adequate but I've certainly had better.

The rooms are clean and satisfactory but nothing special. We stayed in $100 rooms which were quite large but for the area, i think are a bit overpriced. The gardens are well kept and very pretty. The hotel is located near a very busy roundabout, and there is quite a lot of traffic noise. We could hear it in our rooms (139 and 141) but the rooms in other blocks would probably be better.

Room Tip: The rooms further away from the road would ensure a better night's sleep.

Chez Lando is a good address for your stay in Kigali. It is clean, well kept, service is kind. Rooms can be a bit noisy, especially those on ground floor. Food is also ok with too big restaurant areas.

My colleague and I were placed here by our client agency. We stayed one week, before I suggested another hotel (Umubano) might be quieter in terms of traffic noise. Basically, it is a very pleasant hotel in terms of gardens, greenery, rooms, and food quality. Staff were pleasant too. The main problem (for me) was traffic noise (roads now surround the hotel, while it must have been very tranquil once). If it does not bother you, no problem.

The snag was with lunch and dinner service: no buffet, so have to wait for service. This is difficult when you have a limited time between meetings for lunch. Electrical cabling length in rooms (and supply of sockets) was limited. So, lots of improvisation needed (incl importation of a garden table to work on). But everyone was very helpful.

Its prices are reasonable, and all was very comfortable; good atmosphere; lively, and clearly a social hub. NB If you are staying long, there is nowhere for exercise (pool or gym).

Room Tip: New garden blocks, furthest away from the road.

While not a "5-star" hotel in the conventional sense, I think Chez Lando is the best value for its price in Kigali. The bungalow rooms are spacious and well-apportioned, the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are quite nice as well. The environment overall is great, with trees and very nice landscaping. Breakfast was nice, and the staff very responsive. I look forward to staying here again soon.

Room Tip: Bungalow rooms are spacious, bright and new.

I've stayed in Chez Lando in 2005, 2011 and 2013, and it is always a pleasure. The hotel has grown and evolved over the years, but kept its charm. Having seen a lot of hotels around Africa, Chez Lando is one of my favourites. Staff is excellent and helpful, rooms are spacious and clean, garden is beautiful and buildings are nice architecture. They have mosquito nets over the beds. It's nicely located close to the airport, but the sound of airplanes does not disturb. Neither is there any other disturbing noises of e.g. traffic. Breakfast is delicious and there's plenty of variety, always fresh fruit available. The hotel restaurant is very good, albeit a bit slow, but not especially slow compared to many other places. Try the brochettes! Chez Lando has a warm and welcoming feeling about it, something you don't always get in more massive hotel complexes. I will go back and can easily recommend it to anyone looking for a calm, nice stay in Kigali.

This is not the Kigali Serena. If you're expecting "5 star" accommodations, you might want to look elsewhere. What the Chez Lando offers is clean rooms, friendly staff, and a very local vibe. Unlike other higher-end hotel options in Kigali, where you'll find many of the guests are expatriates, Chez Lando is a vibrant local hotel and social hotspot. While it too attracts its share of out-of-town visitors, it is also a well-visited local hang-out spot. While staying there for the first time in December 2011, my sons and I enjoyed sitting in the outdoor restaurant area and watching a rousing televised soccer game (Arsenal against who-cares-who-else?) with some rabid fans, including many Rwandans. It was a highlight of our trip. And very different from the experience at, say, the Serena (where I've also stayed). Not knocking it at all -- it's great if pampering and top-of-the line (including the price) is what you're looking for.

We liked the hotel so well that we also stayed there on a subsequent trip in the summer of 2012.

Chez Lando is also a short walk from a reasonably well-stocked supermarket and foreign exchange bureau (FOREX), both of which are open reasonably late, like 9 or 10 pm.

Room Tip: Newer rooms in the middle of the hotel complex are a bit larger, nicer and QUIETER (although they ar...

This year, for the first time, I had serious problems with Chez Lando's online reservation service. Their webpage, at http://www.chezlando.com/, has a dysfunctional 'Contact us' service which twice failed to respond to my written requests. When WHO/Rwanda made my reservation in person, the hotel lost it. They had a room free when I showed up, but things could have gone the other way. Their webpage gives neither their Email address, info@chezlando.com, nor their phone numbers, including +250 (0)252582050 and +250 (0)252589804. I pointed out these omissions to their management at check-out; maybe they will fix the problem.

I paid $100 per night, b & b, for a lovely bungalow; the rooms in the other section run about $60. Breakfast was OK, and staff were friendly. I did not lunch there; Dinners are in their bar and restaurant, which has a friendly African ambience, with billiard table. Food is good though not great. One of their pizzas is enough for two people.

Internet connectivity was good; slow except at night. The cable had Al-Jazeera, BBC and France 24, plus sports & entertainment.

Location is close to the airport, which has advantages. In today's Kigali, traffic is not the same impediment to airport locations as it would be in most African cities.

Three minor points: the rooms had no air conditioning, no ball point pens, no shampoo, and no telephone guides. These are things which I expect in a four star establishment.

Room Tip: If you can afford the hundred bucks, stay in the bungalow area, which has nicely sculpted gardens.
