4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2013

Facilities neccessary are all there including wifi. Though you would need to take transport to go around unless u dont mind walking a lot. A hreat coffee place nearby to brunch an not a bad chinese restaurant to dine for dinner. Showers could be better. Rooms are made for only what you need. Dont expect any aesthetical inputs. I see more younger people from all culture come to stay here.

Kigali does not have a huge array of backpacker's options available, but this is a good one. It has all the things you'd expect a backpackers hostel to have: dorms with bunk beds and storage space, shared showers (clean and usually with hot water, nice!), pleasant communal area where you can relax and meet other people, a small bar, a small shop (t-shirts, books, toiletries), information about tours and trips in Rwanda. A nice extra is the balcony overlooking the garden.

The people who work at reception are friendly and helpful. They leave the premises at 11 PM but there is always a guard at night at the hostel's gate. The hostel felt safe and secure. The area it is in is not directly in the center of Kigali but it's in a good neighborhood (near embassies and ministries and with a nice choice of restaurants very close by. Try Shokolo Lite which is in the same building as the bookshop and pharmacy opposite the Great Wall of China restaurant, delicious food and nice lounge area). There are usually taxis waiting outside if you want to go somewhere but it is just as easy and much cheaper to get into town using the small minibuses that go around. When leaving the hostel walk straight to the main road, then turn left and walk for about 3 minutes on the side walk until you see a yellow bus stop. Pretty much every minibus that passes here will bring you to town).

Breakfast was good and big, consisting of toast, fruit salad, eggs, sometimes potatoes or vegetables.

We booked the 4 bed dorm which was adequate. Mosquito netting and warm blankets were available and the sheets where changed often. The room was very clean, though a bit tiny.

The hostel is managed by Aegis Trust, who maintain the Kigali Genocide Memorial (well worth a visit, easy to reach by minibus as described above) with the profits of the hostel. I believe a visit to the memorial is a must if you are staying in Kigali and I highly urge you to do so. You will get a deeper understanding of the country's recent past and you will appreciate the hostel even more, knowing that your money will go toward the upkeep of this important memorial.

In short: good and solid backpacker's place with the added bonus of charity. I hope to go back to Rwanda in the future and if I do I will be staying here again.

Room Tip: We traveled in a group of 3 and booked the entire 4 bed dorm by paying for the extra bed so we had t...

I stayed in this hostel for a week and loved every second of it. It is located in a great place and is close to a number of attractions. There was hot water in the showers during specific parts of the day and this was a luxury. The staff were incredibly friendly and I met some great people there who I ended up travelling with around Rwanda and Uganda.

Staff were super friendly, everything was very clean, and it's convenient to get around town. The food was good and reasonably priced, and it was great to have a little bar open each evening on site! Kigali is a pretty expensive city, so this is by far your best bet!

I stayed at Discover Rwanda for almost three weeks and definitely enjoyed my stay. The beds could be a little more comfortable, but I appreciate the staff's hardworking effort to keep the establishment clean. Every morning I woke to the staff cleaning the hallways and bathroom. The showers had hot water during specific posted hours, but were typically hot when they said it would be. The staff is incredibly helpful. A group of us were interested in going to Akagera National Park and the ladies in the front helped us with a price quote and providing names of hotels and transportation options. A light breakfast with coffee and tea and free (although only somewhat reliable) wifi is included in the price as well. The other guests were nice and friendly company. Next time I'm in Kigali I'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Maybe just a personal preference, but my roommate and I found the downstairs slightly dusty - perhap...

The staff are nice and friendly, the food is very good for the price. OK, the tap joint in the bathroom of the 8-bed dorm dribbled water all over the floor, but there was constant hot and cold water and plenty of space, the toilet flushed - quite adequate for a budget traveller's needs! Lovely verandah for sitting out of the sun. TV if you want to watch football. I would definitely stay there again.

The hostel staff speak decent English and are incredibly helpful. Location is a little out of the way from the city center, but that is easily rectified by the number of taxi motos (motorcycle taxis) that congregate approximately 100m away from the hostel - a cheap and fun way to get around Kigali. There is a nice coffee house located on the second floor of the building directly opposite the hostel, which offers good food and free books so you can while away an afternoon if you so choose. My room and shared bathroom in the hostel were clean, and I noted that the cleanliness of the bathroom is checked at least a few times a day. Also, I understand that the proceeds from this hostel go towards education and social programmes relating to the genocide. At the time of my trip (June 2012) I understood this to be the only hostel in Kigali then. I'm not sure if any more have sprung up since, but if I were ever to return to Kigali I would stay here again.
