“Good and bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

I stayed in this hotel for a week recently and think I would not stay again. The rooms are a good size and nicely decorated BUT I had to move twice as there was no hot water. Even then it never came really hot. The windows in the rooms are glass slats and I had some missing and it was noisy if guests are talking in the garden or restaurant and also noise from passing traffic. I was put in a suite but had to move as at 11pm when the restaurant closed the banging and crashing from the kitchen and staff chatting stopped me sleeping.
The breakfast was not so good either and the language barrier meant mistakes in orders. The internet was OK and choice of TV channels was good.
Lovely views over Kigali

Room Tip: All rooms had their faults. Rooms 6 and 7 are in the garden and best of a bad bunch

This is a renovated beautiful old home/mansion in a nice area of Kigali. (It is near the Hotel Diplomate). Neighborhood is good, and you can feel safe strolling here. There are big new houses in this residential area.
There is a big columned verandah, a view of the hills, a lovely small flower garden and gazebo. It's a nice place to relax with a drink and a good book.
My room was on the ground level (entering from a small patio off the lawn) and was enormous, with great satellite TV (even some shows from USA) which I had not seen in many days of travel, and wifi access. The bed was so comfortable. The bathroom is large, the shower was strong and hot, and toiletries smelled great.
The room was nearly spotless, although there was some old mildew staining in the shower area. I told them to try beach to make it disappear, which hopefully they have done by now.
A possible negative might be for light sleepers, as my room faced the gazebo which is used for dining/drinks/meetings, and the noise, while it didnt bother me, could keep someone from sleep if windows are open (Alternatively, air conditioning is available, but wasnt necessary while i stayed.)
Room prices are starting at $190 to $240/night.
Staff are excellent and pleasant. Special thanks to the young housekeepers: college student Fifi, and dancer Bora. The staff at the bar and reception are super. Merci beaucoup!
Theirry is the chef and owner, and the breakfasts were good, with fresh fruit and good coffee. Dinner one night was quite good; the second night, there was a huge group of folks at the restaurant, and perhaps because of this, my dinner of soup and appetizer were not too good, as if it had been put together at the last minute.
Hotel Select has a far more "personal" feel than a large chain hotel, which makes it an attractive option for Kigali.

Room Tip: There are a variety of rooms and suites. Some you enter from outside (from the lawn); others from in...

Stayed at this place for 2 nights, as traveled first time for work to Kigali...The hotel has no heating water facility it seems like. Turned on the water for a shower and out comes cold water.. waited for 2, 5, 10 minutes still no hot water. call the house keeping, inform keep waiting for hot water run it for 20 minutes. Talk about wastage of natural resource. Well waited for 25 minutes still no hot water, ended up having a cold shower. Next morning, same situation. plus at 6:30am they have carpenters renovating the gazebo, knocking in the wood. No concern for hotel guests staying and possibly sleeping. Also room facing the forest / front one can hear the fast cars passing by on the main road. Breakfast was not bad and kitchen staff was quite courteous. They also did not have any small biting like wafers, nuts with drinks. Did inform the hotel manager about the water issue, but did not get a response as if not interested. I would surely be going back to Kigali but not staying at this place.

Room Tip: Dont choose Room no 6

Nice hotel, the only problem I had was that the water pressure in my bathroom was none existing, (ROOM3) had to run the bath for 30 min before its full. Paid US120-00 per night, breakfast included and free WI-FI Internet, food service is slow (usual in Africa) and do not ask for a PIZZA when having dinner in the restaurant outside, we ordered PIZZA (which is not on the dinner menu) and was told by the manager or head chef about 30 min after we ordered, that PIZZA is normally only served as room service, not during dinner.... I only reason for this that I can think of is that the image of the restaurant would be tarnished by serving pizza....?

Room Tip: Apparently room 2 has a massive bathroom....

Most big hotels in Kigali are of average to high standard, but lack the charm & feeling of local Kigali life. Select Hotel is the best of both worlds. It's small, set in a rural, quiet neighbourhood and has the quality of many high standard boutiques in Europe.

The rooms are very spacey and of all comfort. Bathroom is almost as big as the room itself! The building itself is set on top of a hill with amazing views of Kigali.

The hotel is actually better known for it's restaurant, so that will tell you the quality of the food is very high. Breakfast is very elaborate with mouth watering pieces of fresh fruits.

All in all the best place to stay when in Kigali. Especially when the bigger chains can not charm you like they could me.

I lived in Rwanda for two years and recently returned for a visit and to do some business. Select is a European boutique hotel transferred to Rwanda -- from the tied back curtains to the assumption that you will have their delicious breakfast in your room rather than in the dining room. Staff were fabulous. Has only seven rooms and is totally charming. Wonderful food (the soupe au poireaux is to die for). Menu is expensive but the menus du jour for dinner are $17 and $20!! For accommodation and/or a meal, Select is the best there is in Kigali -- and the best value in Kigali. Only thing missing is a dip pool. I almost did not submit this -- not sure I want it to be found!

Room Tip: take room 2 -- has a huge bathroom

While it is not exactly cheap, Select Boutique is a lovely new hotel in a safe and very nice part of Kigali. The rooms are comfortable and spacious (our bathroom was enormous!), the wi-fi is free and fast, and the service is extremely attentive. The best part of our stay, though, was the breakfast. There was a great selection of items to choose from and the coffee was much better than what we had elsewhere in Rwanda. My husband and I both ordered a fruit plate, expecting a couple of pieces of pineapple and papaya; what we got instead was an incredible platter with entire fruits carefully carved into bite-sized pieces. Don’t miss it!
