“Great base in Abuja”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

A small but very welcoming hotel. Good location for doing business in central Abuja. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant was great with a very friendly chef. My room was big, well equipped and in excellent condition. The hotel has its own generator so when the power goes off, it kicks in.

Good security.

Free wifi was great.

Would stay there again.

For security reasons, we were advised against staying in several of Abuja's more prominent hotels and wound up in the Protea. It lacks bling, but makes up for it with exceptionally helpful staff and well functioning services. Not cheap for what it is, but, by Nigerian standards, a relative bargain. I recommend it highly.

I only came about this hotel by chance as the nearby Hilton was fully booked but I am so glad that I had the chance to stay, I now recommend this to friends and is my number one choice in Abuja. The hotel is small which gives it a more personalised service plus I felt safer here than I ever did in other Abuja hotels. The restaurant has some great food and friendly chefs who will cater to your needs. The staff were great and very professional, all in all not a bad hotel at all.

Very good hotel, very good services. And safe. Internet connection fast. Good breakfast, but if there was anything more would not hurt. The staff is very helpful. The property is fully fenced and guarded by guards. The hotel is located in a very quiet and safe area. The rooms are air conditioned very strong (but adjustable), and there is free wireless Internet connection.

Very nice location in residential neighborhood, close to key embassies and government. Small hotel, unlike Sheraton or Hilton, so low-key. And good security. Staff was outstanding. Would bend over backwards for you. Rooms adequate. Typical African 4* - be realistic about expectations for general state of repair. That said, I think it seems fairly new. No complaints at all, except the rate was outrageous - on par with other places in Abuja, I.e. fair market value, but way out of range with North American hotels of similar calibre. Nevertheless, I'd stay here again, no doubt, and recommend you do the same.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2011

As per my title, thinking of my 2 night stay at the Protea gives me mixed emotions. Great looking hotel on the outside, very private setting, even a feeling of luxury.

Check in was easy, but suddenly it turns out one of our rooms is not available (had 2 rooms booked for 1 night, and 3 rooms for the second), and we have to pay extra money for a presidential suite or something like that. If we reserved a regular room, I see no reason to pay more for another one. So they whine, the price changes, I call my local contacts, price changes again, we take the room. Lo and behold, the next day, the story repeats with my colleague who arrived later. "Your room is not available, you have to stay at a suite". Well, guess what - his room IS available, because we were vacating it. So, after some more noise, he gets what he reserved in the first place.

Not a good way to get repeat business...

The rooms are fairly decent, with bathroom cleanliness scoring 3 out of 5 at most, and a total lack of any toiletries, except 1 soap bar and a shampoo + body wash (which looked used).

Breakfast is ok, albeit very expensive. Can't speak for dinner, as I didn't try it, but my colleagues did not seem to complain.

It looks like the General Manager spends time at the hotel, talking to patrons and making sure people are happy. Haven't had the opportunity to speak with her, however that adds a touch of class.

The bottom line on this hotel would be, that the value for money is definitely not there - it was way more expensive than Hilton, and I'm not sure it was worth it. I'm staying at the Hilton next time, so I could offer an apples to apples comparison.
