I spent three nights at Rockview Royale in May (Rockview Classic, part of the same group, is up road a short distance away). By Abuja standards it is pretty good value for money (a standard room is about £100 a night): extensive recreational facilities-pool, well-equipped gym, tennis courts. Also a business centre that is open till 11 a.m. and wireless Internet for a nominal fee. Staff were friendly and helpful. However, if ambience is important to you, the hotel has rather a grim and dark feel to it. The rooms are rather too heavily upholstered with velvet bed covers, elaborate curtains more suited to a private sitting room (if that 's your taste) dark carpeting (I chose the blue floor over the red floor - red carpets and red bed covers seems more stress inducing than relaxing to a traveller) and a bath that did not seem that clean.
And then the beds - it was like sleeping on a cement floor. One of the front desk staff helpfully informed me, when I complained, that they could change the mattress for a softer one. My next nights' sleep were a lot more comfortable once it was changed. However, like the bath, the bedding did not have that crisp, fresh look and the pillow cases had a lingering smell of food.
Breakfast was a real downer. The spread is limited and is heavily skewed to heavy Nigerian dishes. Coffee consisted of sachets, to be mixed with lukewarm "hot water", milk was powder that was too thick and concentrated, the breads and pastries looked tired and there was
no provision made for toast.
By Nigerian standards and especially bearing in mind the costly nature of Abuja, this hotel is actually not that bad and does a passable job at catering to the business traveller. However the
details and the ambience fall short of international standards.
If you are a light sleeper the fountain in the courtyard view rooms may wake you up
