“Australians like the Kalahari”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2012

My wife and I and a friend spent a pre trip night at the Kalahari Sands Hotel and found it to be a pleasing experience. The hotel offers good quiet rooms and comfortable beds. Breakfast was more than adequate. Situated in a shopping complex did not detract from the experience and indeed it was convenient to have a super market in the building. The staff were couteous and efficient and indeed the concierge was most helpful.
The hotel is situated in central Winhoek and in walking distance of restaurants and shops. A pleasant hotel most suitable for a stop over.

We got a very good rate when we stayed at the Kalahari Sands. You will not have a better value for money in town. Rooms are very modern and well equipped; above all spacious. Food choice including the room service is poor, so you will be better off eating out. It is a Casino hotel but if you need something in the City Centre then it is the place to go.

Spent 4 days and 3 nights at Kalahari Sands Hotel in the city of Namibia, Windhoek. The check in process was swift and easy. The chambermaid took note of all my requests and made our stay pleasant. The security man stationed at the lift would promptly usher the guests to the waiting elevators.

The worst hotel experience endured during our stay in Namibia.

Arrival - difficult, rude, inefficient, unprofessional reception and other staff. We arrived later than we anticipated due to a flight delay, 7.45pm, with a booked arrival time of 4pm. We checked in only to be told "we are full and busy" and your room is not ready, "ready in 10/15 mins". So we waited just meters from reception counter which is also the entrance to the casino, where non hotel guests also roam around reception area drunk, loud and harassing guests as they enter the hotel entrance. We were never offered a glass of water, complimentary drink at the bar or the suggestion to dine in the restaurant while waiting for the room to be "ready". After 40 mins of waiting in reception, we approached the reception staff to say that this was really not good enough to wait this long for our room - it was now 8.30pm. The only remedy offered was a different room to that of which we booked - at no reduced rate. We thought this was unacceptable as we booked a luxury king room, they offered a standard twin bed room. The reception staff member was so rude and would not listen to our issue any further so he fetched for the duty manager who attended to our booking, apologizing for the inconvenience, and handing us a key card to the room. So we picked up and carried our own bags, finally found the lifts (if you have ever stayed here you know what we mean), reached the room which was nice, clean and spacious. After unpacking and showering we decided not to eat as it was so late, and have a nightcap from the mini bar instead. We couldn't open the fridge for love nor money, it looked locked. So we rang reception……waiting, waiting till it was answered and requested access to the minibar "oh, you have to request it to be unlocked at reception" was told to us. Well that was never explained by the duty manager or other reception staff. So housekeeping arrived to the room and unlocked the minibar.

Accommodation - large and spacious room (as we had booked a luxury king size room) comfy, nice linen, combined bath, shower, loo and vanity area, hair dryer, power points for recharging, desk area with chair, large flat screen TV, minibar (locked), coffee/tea facilities.

Food - Dinner was offered somewhere in the hotel, but due to our debacle at reception we chose to not eat at all as it was so late. Breakfast buffet was included in room rate. Selection and food quality was very good however sleepy bored staff tended to group together laughing and chatting until a supervisor walked past to break them up. The staff would remove your plates and glasses before you had finished with them. You had to keep saying "no" not finished.

Minibar issue - at 7am the next morning, we had a knock at the door - it was a staff member wanting to check what we had consumed in the minbar last night! We were showering and dressing at this time, and he was lucky we were not asleep. Outrageous - they do not trust their guests and customers. We left the room at 8am and were chased by a staff member whilst the lift door was closing about the minibar again! Maybe the issue is they don't trust their own staff?

Reservations - Book directly with hotel via website, using credit card.

Facilities - Small bar near reception, Casino with poker machines.

Best - clean rooms, old but well maintained, breakfast buffet (quality and selection of food).

Comments - reception staff had an appalling attitude, casino vagrants sculling from wine bottles, drunk, in the reception area.

Hint - for those choosing between the Kalahari Sands & Casino or the Hilton Hotel - Hilton wins 2 hands down - price, location, facilities, food & staff. Stayed at both hotels during our Namibian trip. We also stayed at the Sun International, Sun Hotel in Gaborone with no issues at all.

This hotel is in an excellent location smack in downtown Windhoeck, ideal for shopping or business. The rooms and bathrooms are well appointed, breakfast is good. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Unless you want to spend the money for the new Hilton, this is the place to stay.

A great location if you go to Windhoek . The room service fillet steak was excellent and at US$ 10 including tray charge what a bargain. It was basic but clean & comfortable.

Room Tip: The higher you go the quiter it is.....
