“Southern Sun: A Place to Stay in Maputo, Mozambique”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

The Southern Sun Maputo must have been a beautiful hotel some years ago but the infrastructure deteriorated over the years. Now, the interior is heavy and a bit sad. Nevertheless, being located on the beach is a plus, and the rooms while small and again a bit sad, are comfortable. I did not expect a high tech hotel and certainly I did not get one.
The beach outside the hotel is well kept but the general condition of the water with trash scattered everywhere is not inviting. Fortunately, the hotel has a nice pool.
The hotel staff is friendly but not very helpful. I tried to make contact with the concierge via email about taking a tour. I got no reply. The hotel actually has a tour desk. We tried to get assistance to find a tour but frankly the young woman who handles the desk did not seem to care.
The restaurant is inconsistent, depending on what you order. Fish, the entire 3 days I was there consisted of swordfish only. If you wanted a grilled fish, then it was swordfish. If you want fish and chips, which is also on the menu, then it was still swordfish. The actual fish was well overcooked and without any redeeming quality. Of the other hand, one night I had the best prawns I’ve had anywhere. Mozambique is famous for the prawns. They are good everywhere.
Take a coco tour of Maputo because it is enjoyable. A coco is a rickshaw-like vehicle produced in Cuba. The driver will show you the sights and give a brief history lesson. More important, you can spot places you might like to visit, like the artist markets.
Overall, I think the Southern Sun is one of the better hotels in Maputo. I would recommend it as a reasonably prices hotel that is clean and relatively safe.

Room Tip: Best rooms have a beach view. A few rooms have a patio on the beach side

I never thought that I would write a review here, but we have had such a poor experience that I feel the need to warn other travelers.

I was assuming that for more than 300 US bucks I would get a civilized hotel and room. The room smelled of mold, the window could have just as well not been there as it had tremendous gaps around the edges and the service was sub-standard. The only positive part was breakfast. On our way back through Maputo we stayed in the Cardoso. Same price but much much better. I will never stay in Souther Sun Maputo again, but would gladly return to Cardoso or Polona. DO NOT STAY IN SOUTHER SUN YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.

Stayed for 2 nights at the Southern Sun. Upon arrival we were shocked to see that there is a huge construction in progress adjacent to the hotel (this will be a new wing). Work was on from 7 am to 6 pm and with much noise. When trying to relax by the pool we felt like being in a steel factory. The hotel website does not mention this fact and no price reduction applied to compensate for the inconvenience. So for those looking for a quiet holiday my advise is to avoid this hotel for the time being. For the business traveller, who is out during the day and only returns at night it is OK. The hotel is nicely located right on the beach. From a seaview room one can see the most beutiful runrise between 5:30-6:00 am. The beach section right in front of the hotel is raked every morning, so it is quite clean. However, only about 20 meters in each direction it begins to look like a garbage dumpyard. Unbelievable amount of garbage is washed to shore every morning, just to be pulled back to sea in the afternoon. If only three people were given large garbage bags, they could clean up the area between the two wind breakers within two hours. Simply cannot understand why the hotel management does not take care of this. Guests like to stroll on the beach, but as it is, that is a disgusting experience. The hotel in general is ok, although heavily overpriced. Upon arrival we got a room which was very close to the construction site. The safe was not working and the toilet leaked, the sound of which can be very annoying at night. We reported it, but when we returned 3 hours later still nothing was done about it. Upon our complaint we were given another room. This seemed in order, except for the fact that there was no wifi. Again, we should have been informed, that not all rooms have good connectivity. Window could not be properly closed after opening because of rusted frame. There is no refrigerator in the rooms. On the positive side, all hotel staff were friendly and polite. Breakfast was good and restaurant staff very attentive. Comfortable bed and excellent pillows, clean room. Good size swimming pool. Conclution: with next door construction finished, run-down rooms refurbished, beach cleaned up and attention to details, this hotel could be a good one.

My partner and I stayed here for a short while en route to Inhambane. We quite liked it, and many of the staff are friendly and helpful. It's also right on the beach so you get good views, though many of the rooms, including ours, are road-facing. The food is fairly good and although expensive by African standards, not too bad overall. Areas which were less good were: some of the staff, especially on the tour desk had a 'I couldn't care less' attitude and seemed very disinterested in helping us. We eventually managed to book a city tour but it was hard going, and the masseuse they apparently booked for us never materialised. Also, the waiting staff expected tips for literally everything they did, which seems a bit off given the prices this hotel charges. The pool area is nice but there is a huge building development happening next door so don't expect any peace and quiet for the next few months until this is complete.

This is a well managed hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and efficient the prawns in the restaurant were superb. The sea facing rooms have an excellent view of the sea and African sun rises . The staff are really excited about the imminent redecoration program . Please try to keep the relaxed atmosphere !

A good experience with a great sea view somewhat spoilt by poor lunch service in bar when I needed to get to the airport and large parties who arrived after me were served first. Given small size of bar there is no need for this.
