“Perfect final rest in 4 month cycle from Egypt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2011

After a couple tough weeks on the bicycles,we arrived to find a hotel with one of the best positions I have ever had the pleasure of staying at!
Located almost "in" the ocean, the views from the bar, restaurant and rooms are serenely beautiful. The fact that one can enjoy that same view from the pool makes this hotel even more inviting.
After weeks of camping and "roughing" it, this was the perfect venue to relax and refresh the spirits and the body before our last stretch back to South Africa.

We are so grateful to have been welcomed by Cymon and the rest of the smiling, friendly staff and will remember our stay here for some time!!

Thank you to staff and management for an exceptional stay at the merru island hotel resort.
Cannot fault the resort, everthing from huge variety of menu to the laid back atmosphere and friendly and very capable staff make this perhaps the best hotel I have ever had the pleasure to stay at. Night life not great but when all is is perfect who cares!

If you've been to Maputo, you can probably appreciate a hotel that's somewhat of a haven from the rest of the city, and the Southern Sun is such a hotel. The location is a bit detached from the city center, but it's next to a few good restaurants, bars, and street shopping opportunities. The rooms weren't much to write home about, but there were clean and comfortable. The internet is fast and easy to access (much more so than the two other Maputo hotels I experienced). The staff are friendly and helpful. Overall, it's a good bet for a few nights in Maputo.

First impression is a quality hotel, but scratch the surface and one discovers the truth. The rooms are small and very very noisy especially from neighbouring bathrooms. The aircon is either hot or cold with no inbetween. Turn it off and hear all the goings on in the hotel. TV is excellent for English speakers. Breakfast is excellent and with a beautiful view of the sea. Wifi didn't work in the room and despite numerous attempts nothing was done to fix it. Always a smile from the staff, but it seems everything is done with the most reluctance. Customer service does not seem to be in Southern Sun's vocabulary

Room Tip: Expensive noisy stay for a very good breakfast

I hesitated a little before writing this review thinking may be I was just unlucky , but you know what , it is not about luck ... they have issues !!

To start with , the receptionist was unfriendly , no one helped with baggage and even no one showed me where the room is , I just went around searching.

The room did ALWAYS smell , had no mini-bar or refrigerator , was poorly serviced every morning and for a five stars hotel , did not really look that nice.

Was not able for two days to exchange money without even the courtesy to give a decent excuse ...And finally , that may be irritating for me only , but the internet costs 0.25 USD per minute !!!

One of the best designed hotels I ever stayed in my lifetime. The half cicular building bears the ambience of a true portuguese essence. The experience of facing the endless sea from anywhere of the hotel increases the grandeur of your stay. The best part is having the morning breakfast on the lush green lawn facing the endless sea.
The rooms are old fashioned but clean and smell fresh. Specially the bed linen, pillows are new and well maintained, but light fittings in the rooms are relatively old that make the rooms dark during the night.
Breakfast is good enough, fresh fruit juices are worth mentioning. Dinner options are less and I didn't experience the lunch menus.I liked was the evening experience of the open and sea facing bar with its friendly service professionals, who deserves praise.
The business centre has all the basics with fast internet facility. I also loved the gym where one can do his everyday fitness practice facing the tranquil sea.
The hotel is centrall located and easily accessible from Maputo city

The hotel may be rated second but performs like a 2-3 star hotel. The front & reception staff are great! The restaurant and especially the housekeeping staff leave alot to be desired. The breakfast is enjoyable, helped by the fact that Mozambique has great fruit. The bar has great service, and is the place to be.

To have an enjoy stay while you are here, remember the following:
Double lock your door, housekeeping knocks once and opens the door, thats it!
If you can take your own iron. Dont use dry cleaning
