“Chilling in the capital of Mozambique”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2012

This place is a real backpackers with all the vibes and services you require. Information about traveling and activities and even an organized bus trip to the other Fatima's backpackers in Tofo!
Possibilities for dorms, camping and private rooms and the toilets and showers are very clean.
If you are a backpacker or want a good price/ quality deal go here!

We were NOT impressed by this backpackers. In our 16 weeks in Africa – a good portion being in the much less developed West Africa – I think this place was the one we liked the least. The kitchen was greasy and grimy, there were hardly any utensils, there were ants, and there was no hot water in the kitchen sink so everything was greasy and dirty. The bathrooms were dirty and grimy – they were wiped down every day but never really cleaned. The shower drains were so slow that even with a quick shower, you were still standing in ankle-deep, scummy water by the end of it. The water pressure went in and out and on one night, you couldn’t turn on the cold water and had to try and not scald yourself with the hot. The bathrooms were constantly out of paper. There was no soap at any of the sinks – sometimes including the kitchen sink. The prices were outrageous. We camped (the camping area was decent – on a rooftop and private) but it cost $13 USD per person! Come on – to sleep outside on a concrete roof?! Absurd. They had just installed a pay-as-go internet system that they were charging nearly $7 USD per hour for. Not to mention, they didn’t know how to get to the log in page so that you could log out if you didn’t use all of your time in one sitting. You could hear the clock ticking away on your minutes while they tried to figure it out and then they wouldn’t give you any extra minutes to make up for what they wasted. The worst part, though, was when a HUGE storm came through one night and they refused to allow us to move our tent under a covered area which was only being used for clotheslines. Everywhere else we stayed up until then, if there had been rain in the forecast, had offered us the use of their dorms should it start raining! All we wanted was to sleep under some clotheslines for a night. I know a lot of people will say, “This is Africa” and that you can’t expect luxury. We understand that but you can at least expect hospitality – especially at those rates.

We stayed at Fatima's in Maputo for 7 days and towards the end we did not bare staying and switched to The Base instead.
Reasons:
1. Arrogant and unfriendly staff (especially the young lady working there).
2. A self catering kitchen without a single sharp knife in combination with rats and ants sharing the space.
3. Food got stolen almost every night...
4. Their exchange rates and generally the prices on every thing they cater is above normal.
5. NO WIFI, though in the guide book it says that they have it...?

Room was ok (though over priced) and there is a great atmosphere with all the nice backpackers enjoying the outdoor seating space. It has potential but needs some serious re-work to get back on its feet!!!

Just by being a bustling backpackers the atmosphere alone usually makes for a great place, but Fatima's seems to be happy to have found itself in the position of Maputo's biggest backpackers rather than actually doing things to maintaining its fame. Even for a backpackers the entire place is quite shabby whilst also being quite expensive. I paid $50 for a double room, which is not much cheaper than some budget hotels. The location is the biggest let down, it's in a suburb a good 45 minutes walk from anywhere of note. THe Base, Fatima's competition, is ideally located jsut near the bus stop (for Jo'burg). Fatima's has another backpackers on Tofo beach which is vastly better. This one in the city you can't help but think will become irrelevant if any other big backpackers were to open in Maputo.

In Maputo as well as in Tofo I strongly recommend NOT staying in Fatima's. They'll treat you bad with the
1. exchange rate (banks were closed, even at 100 euro's they wouldn't give me more than 3MT while the normal price everywhere else is 3.4)
2. Promises they don't keep and then treat you as if you are stupid. 1800MT for 5 nights and one moment of payment say that it's 1900.
3. Transport. I met three guys that were already in the taxi and paid 600MT for the same trip as where I paid 700MT for. Saying 'special bus from Fatima's to Fatima's' and then throwing you in a local taxi with no pillows on the seets, squeezing more people on the bench than would normally fit. It's fine if you don't get nailed for the price, because then it's your choice, but don't make promises you don't keep.

I had a great time in Mozambique, bribed a cop for 3 euro's and did amazing Scuba Diving at Tofo Scuba, but Fatima's was a thorn in the eye, a very very big shame. The food there is not very nice neither, overcooked seafood is not what one wants...

I've travelled quite a lot and don't wine easily, but when I feel screwed people are gonna hear it, because they should not do that to others. Treat eachother well and the positive word spreads. Treat eachother bad and I'll try my best to make your business miserable in the hope that you either learn from it or shut down. In this case I hope Fatima's stops excisting, because they don't deserve the name 'backpackers'.

Beautiful trip to Mozambique, the bus from Durban was quite good (Africa bus is quite cheap and empty, unfortunately for them) The last few days in Tofo I stayed in the Bamboozi lodge, cheaper, friendlier and a happier environment.

At first i had my reservations as no one replied to my email, but i phoned and made my booking. It was good for us. We had a double without en suite. They do charge a bit more but as a couple in a double it was worth it for us as they provide plug points, a fan and mosquito nets that the other backpackers don't. Its also way prettier and have way more space. It was kept very clean whilst we were there. I would recommend it.

In september 2011 me and my girlfriend went to Mozambique and to maputo. We found a place where good stay for 2 nights, (Fatima's place). The staff was very friendly and the rooms where clean. The prices where very very high and because we coud'nt find another place we stayed there. I can recommend this place if you are willing to pay more than reqular. A big plus is the security all night at the fence.
