“find another place to stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2012

The food was bad, the rooms dirty, the so called high speed internet is a rip off. This place is horrible. The business center is a rip off and the staff dont care about the residents. I will never stay here again. I would rather sleep outside. There were roaches running all over the room, the desk light was broke and when reported ... NOTHING ... they dont care. The place is old and looks old. Back to the so called high speed internet, you have to pay around 50 USD for 1gb of data, it is a bad connection even though your signal is good and it kept kicking me offline. The Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe has definitely seen better days but still provides a reasonable service and is centrally located. However, visitors need to be aware of some shrotcomings. If paying in cash, make sure that you have the correct amount, as change is given in Kwacha, which can be difficult if you are heading straight to the airport to catch a flight!
Rooms do vary in price, but location is very important. During my last stay, this week, I was allocated a room close to the reception area, which was extremely noisy, particularly later at night, as people returned to their rooms and talked loudly as they proceeded down the corridor. Finally, check your bill carefully to avoid additional items being included on it.

Room Tip: Away from the reception area is a must. Higher rooms are best postioned.

The rooms are basic but spacious enough and clean. Limited choice on TV. Bathrooms have tired looking shower curtains. The hotel is under refurbishment so hopefully all this will soon change. Staff were freindly but looked overwhelmed- bills had to be corrected twice, I was called by mistake at 0430 and, although in a smoking room, there was no ashtray. It was provided when requested, but never left in the room. Very good food in the outdoor restaurant.

As with many smaller African capital cities, the choice of hotel is fairly limited, and the room prices reflect this, so you don't expect the same standard as you might get elsewhere. But as a business traveller, you simply want a clean room, good service, and a decent restaurant, and this hotel delivers that. The restaurant is especially good - the service and the food are both excellent and good value.

This hotel is a dive with a gloomy, moldy interior that smells like the insid eof a dog kennel. As we were checking in a couple was at the desk complaining that their backpack with passports and credit cards had been stolen from their room. Otherwise service was alright, but not worth the money you are paying. We are cutting our stay in this hotel short and moving to something else for the rest of our stay in Lilongwe.

if you want security, Capital will not guarantee it. I was robbed by hotel cleaning staff and management made no effort to investigate, apologize or even replace what i lost.

I'm never staying there. Protea is a better hotel

For the price of this hotel you can certainly find a better place - or a cheaper place that's equivalent. The "standard" rooms are quite awful considering they cost $126/night. The "superior" rooms are fine and about on par with any economy hotel/motel chain in the U.S.

More on the "standard" room - they are on the lower level. There's a small window but it's over 6 feet high on the wall so you can't see out of it - the AC unit is up there as well so you have to stand on a chair to adjust the AC. There are 2 twin beds which consist of a foam mattress on a slab of wood. There's no in-room safe and no deadbolt on the door. So for the price, I think they are definitely not worth it. If you have to stay here I would highly recommend getting a superior room - you may be able to talk the staff into giving you one at the standard rate.

The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant has good food, but it's on the pricey side. The breakfast buffet is included and is a nice spread, with a suitable breakfast for just about anyone.

There is a business center and wifi is available but both come at a pretty hefty charge.
