An oasis in Tana! The perfect hotel to escape the chaos that is Tana. The hotel is nesseled beside the Presidential Palace, is only minutes walk to the main street and shopping areas. Being located in a narrow side street against the walls of the palace may seem a negative, but it creates a perfect quite escape from Tana's daily life. The hotel has an old and refurbished section, and over the coarse of two-three weeks we stayed in both, during 4 separate stays while travelling (driving/flying) around Madagascar. Ask for the refurbised rooms if you can, though the older rooms were still well appointed and had colonial charm. The reception/bar is cosy, with many local rums on offer.

The Restaurant, which I'll review separately, it also one of the best in Tana which should not be missed!

If staying in Tana, make sure you spend at least one night at La Varangue.....

Room Tip: Choose a refurbished room if you can, or at least a room with a balcony to be able to feel the local...

This hotel is simply charming! The owner is evidently a fan of collecting antiques and every corner is covered with antique objects (cameras, oil lamps, and gramophones are just a few. He also has an impressive antique car collection up front). The hotel is located near the presidential palace. The service at the hotel was excellent (they helped us get reliable drivers and confirm our internal Madagascar flights).
We had the opportunity to stay at two different rooms at this hotel and they were both comfortable. One of them was so large I believe it was larger than my first apartment! Not all rooms have air conditioners, but the ones that do not are equipped with mosquito nets and fans which made it perfectly comfortable to sleep.

The restaurant is a must. Reasonably priced, it offers really great dishes and a great selection of wines and beer. We could tell that it was a favorite of locals as well. We almost forewent dessert, but changed our minds last minute and ordered the “explosion”. It was a hollow chocolate ball filled with apple tapenade and ice cream and at the table they would pour hot chocolate on the hollow ball until it “exploded”. Delicious!

My wife and I stayed at the hotel on two occasions during our two and a bit weeks in Madagascar. The staff were very accommodating and kept our bags for us when we went off for a week. They even gave us a room to get ready for the airport when we returned. As it was off season we were given an upgrade to our rooms which were amazing very large and with every amenity. We ate twice in the restaurant and the food was fantastic and very good value compared to European prices. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed at La Varangue several times. While not all rooms are equal in terms of space, we found all four that we have stayed in to be very clean and comfortable with enough space. La Varangue is also surprisingly tranquil, considering its central location. The staff is quite friendly and helpful. Breakfast is exceptionally good with much more choice available than for a typical French-inspired breakfast. Next time in Tana, I’ll definitely choose La Varangue.

Room Tip: Rooms in the older part of the building are a little more spacious and have more charm.

The location is perfect, the rooms are nice and very large, the service is good, the restaurant is one of the best around and the price, although in the higher range for the city, remains very reasonable. On top of that you've got a funny decor and even collectors cars in front of the entrance! What to add? Good place. I'd go back there myself!

Room Tip: I had a huge one in the main building, my colleague had one with a small patio on the side …. your c...

We stayed here four separate nights during our three week visit to Madagascar. We stayed in three different rooms. One with a view of the courtyard and President's Palace, one with a view of the City and one huge Suite (#1). The first two rooms were standard rooms and were good but not great. The suite was fantastic. All the rooms had modern furntiure, all the typical amentities and were comfortable. They do have a PC for guests and wifi that works better in the lobby than some of the rooms - internet is problematic in Madagascar so we came to rely on the wifi here as we used this hotel as our base of operations. All flights seem to be bewtween Tana and someplace else. Another note about flying in this country - do not trust the schedules - get to the airport 2 hours in advance and ALWAYS reconfirm. Most of our flights ended up departing well before the scheduled departure. Also it can take anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes to get to the airport - a real consideration.

One should be prepared for mosquitos throughout the hotel. We saw more mozzies in Tana than in all the rest of the country. The restaurant is the big calling card, particularly if you like fine French dining. The hotel, outside of our rooms, was furnished with tons of interesting antiques. The owner is gracious and helpful. Another note - the restaurant is not open on Sunday but it is located within a few minutes walking of the Hotel Colbert in one of the nicer neighborhoods on a hill next to the President's Palace. I highly recommend the hotel unless you want to be in a large hotel that caters to groups.

I am still sitting outside the Varangue and am very sad that the week here is coming to an end...

This is the cutest hotel I ever stayed in. Its only a small hotel but with a few rooms. And the very friendly and caring staff makes you feel at home and part of the family.

The special athmosphere is underlined by all the small old objects being decorated everywhere. Its like being in a museum which offers sleeping facilities. So much to see.

The food is excellent (a bit pricey in comparision with other restaurants in Antanarivo but the service and quality of it, is worth the price! Nouvelle cuisine at its best!).

I know the Madegash people don't like the idea. Apart from the Jakaranda trees around and the view this hotel could be somewhere in the south of France. Which in MY eyes is something nice. For me it was a bit being in Europe again, a real treat!

What else?

Now problems with electricity!
WiFi for free and very strong!
There is enough pressure in the bathroom and the water is very hot - when you are living in Africa a standard you will really appreciate! And I did!!
Not far away from the centre, near the Palais du Président but in a quiet road.

If I ever come back to Antanarivo - La Varangue is it!!

Bonne chance et à bientôt!
