“seen better days”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2011

We started our holiday in Madagscar at the Radama and found it adequate. As it happened all the other hotels stayed in were much better. The staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly in sorting out our safe.
Breakfast was adequate but the evening meal - I had chosen which was advertised as a typical Malagasy meal was tasteless.

The dull grimy lobby tells you all you need to know. The street noise made it hard to sleep, the bed was uncomfortable, the pillow lumpy, the carpet threadbare. The cupboard, lamp and safe that were provided were all broken. Even the hook on the door had fallen off. By far the worst place I stayed in Madagascar, not to be touched with a bargepole. Try Chez Aina, a heart-warming experience.

Taking in consideration Madagascan hotels, this one is OK, but the lack of water is a serious problem for many rooms it seems.

The does seem to have seen better days but was clean. The breakfast and evenings meal was OK, but there are better restaurants to be found.

Water here seems to be a issue. Spending one then later two nights at the hotel resulted in a trickle of water on the first visit and virtually none in a different room between the hours of 5.00pm and late in the evening (a tempting minute or two of water which goes off for half an hour once you have the shampoo in your hair!).

As part of a large group in the hotel, not all choosing the same time to shower either, one or two rooms did have plenty of water, but the majority had a trickle at best. I would not choose this hotel because of this, otherwise it would be OK.

We stayed here at the start and end of an Explore Worldwide small group holiday to Madagascar. It is well situated centrally. The hotel is quite old, with lots of steps and rooms on different levels, so not good for anyone with walking difficulties. Our room was fine, with ensuite and plenty of hot water for shower. Not plush, but I don't think many places in Madagascar are that plush!! The breakfast were good and evening meal very welcome after a long flight. Ameniable staff.

Madagascar doesnt have many high quality hotels. This hotel is a great deal for the price. Rooms arent anything special but they are clean with great service. Towels are clean but do have stains. You must know french to survive. And you get free wireless internet...granted it may go out at some points during the day.

You are situated by good eateries (i.e., smal cafes, hotelys--approx. $2.50 at most meals; great restaurants). You can walk to almost anything. I recommend a taxi at night for anything. From the airport, dont pay any more than 20,000 AR. Learn to bargin and stick to the price. And avoid everyone trying to give you help because they will do so and ask for a tip in dollars or euro at every point even if helping you only entails telling you that the exchange is on your right.

Rooms are spacious with balcony. Unfortunately they are not clean at all. Dust everywhere, dirty bathtub, dirty sheets, dirty towels. The frontdesk is willing to call a cab, but you have to pay for it. They wake you up at 8:30 am to inform you the restaurant closes (in case you want to have breakfast). The night before we passed the sleeping nightguard at 11 p.m..We were with four guests and neither the doorbell, nor our entrance did awake him. Come on in everybody, keys are behiind the frontdesk!

Stayed at the Radama Hotel two nights before departing on a Gap Adventure and was disappointed. The main problem is the hotel looks nothing like it is represented on it's website; the pictures must have been taken years ago. We found the hotel very worn, threadbare carpets, very tiny TV, stained towels and ants coming out of the sink. The shower flooded the entire bathroom and into the bedroom area. It looked nothing like what we expected! Reception was very pleasent and helpful. We didn't have to leave a deposit for the remotes for the TV or AC and the AC was very strong. It is very well located and we enjoyed walking to several restaurants in the area, but there are also several hotels in the area that charge about the same but offer nicer rooms, so we stayed at another hotel after our trip ended.Hilary Bradt's guide gives the Radama Hotel an "Upper Range" price which it has, but not the service or rooms to match it! Also their prearranged ariport transfer was very expensive at about $25USD vs our return trip to the airport, arranged by just talking to a taxi driver at $14 USD.

  • Disliked — The room was old, worn, tired looking, not at all as pictured on the website.
