“Friendly, nice & clean !”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2011

A very pleasant stay in a cosy atmosphere, friendly staff, nice location ovelooking the city (easy to walk down the stairs to reach La Ville Basse).
You could use the baggage room if you continue your trip to other places in Mada.
Good food, & got a free ruhm arrangé from the owner, nice chap!

Just a minor point: the wooden floor squeaks ;)

Room Tip: choose a room opposite the street

I had a very pleasant stay at the Brajas while on a recent business trip to Madagascar and found it to be great value. The highlight however was the café/restaurant which I will get onto shortly. The location is great, up on the ridge overlooking the city and the main markets. The streets around the hotel are narrow, windy, cobblestone, affairs lined with old French-style houses and buildings – a real pleasure to walk around and explore. Bring your camera. The running is really nice in the early morning when its cool and before the traffic gets up. The 20min walk up to the Rova and Museum is wonderful and provides stunning views over the city. The grand staircase down to the city center is only minutes away.

The room was nice, decent size, but a little bit cluttered with useless and uncomfortable furniture. For example, there was no functional work desk to set up a computer on and no comfortable chair to sit in and watch TV. I was there on business so this was a major drawback. Also the complimentary Wifi did not reach to the 3rd floor so I had to go downstairs to the restaurant to use the internet anyway which was really inconvenient. The room was clean and comfortable and had everything that you needed including a very well-stocked and reasonably priced mini bar. The city view from my balcony was fantastic – make sure to request a room at the front of the hotel for the view. I didn’t sleep very well however due to the poorly sound insulated room – dogs barking nearby all night and a bit of hallway noise.

The restaurant is really good. There is an extensive menu – good pizzas, tasty Indian food, and more traditional French fare. Everything I’ve tried there has been great and I continue to patronize the restaurant even though I am no longer staying there. The Indian curries are one of my favorite. The restaurant is indoor/outdoor and you can surf the net using the free Wifi while you’re waiting for your meal.

I would definitely stay there again while on holiday, however it is not a good place for the business traveler for the reasons mentioned above. That is the reason why I moved to another nearby hotel this time. At about $60/night, I found it to be excellent value and would recommend it to other travelers.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front for good city views

Very nice hotel in central Tana - close enough to walk down to the centre (NB - best to turn right out of the hotel and take the steps down to the left, rather than use the steps to the east of the hotel). Friendly staff, food decent and safe. As is common in Madagascar, not much privacy in the bathroom (there is a blind rather than a door between the bathroom and the bedroom) but the small rooms are clean and very comfortable. A real gem - a lovely haven in a chaotic city.

This gorgeous hotel is a complete surprise. Located on the high side of town - it has superb views from the from rooms and is fitting out with everything - flat screen TV, Ipod sound system, fully stocked mini-bar and a deep spa bath. But it is all the amzing art works and textiles on display that really impress and transport you into Madagascar. Only drwaback for some could be the high location, it's a way down to the main town, but it's truly worth the stay. Staff are very friendly and efficient, bar is cosy and friendly, food delicious.
