We were also with our 21 -year-old son, so we had a larger room for three persons on the walk-out basement level. It would have been wonderful to be upstairs overlooking the gorgeous garden with rod iron gates and fences. It is a gated old house with 12 rooms. The staff speaks French and Malagasy. A caretaker is there 24 hours a day and they keep your key for you!
Breakfast was included and very delicious, especially the hot milk and fresh ground-up chocolate. The room was clean and had two full-size beds that were pushed together, to make a giant king size plus bed! Our son stayed on a fold out half-couch. There was a tiled shower and an outside patio. The room was spacious, more so than in Europe.
There were two large dressers, two small desks, a coffee table and comfy rugs on the floors. They had two computers and internet and several videos and books you could use.
We paid about $150 USD a night for three persons. It was about $35 less the night we stayed without our son and then $95 on the day-rate. I don't know if there was air-conditioning. We didn't need it being on the lower-level. it was a tiny bit musty. It was also winter in Madagascar, so it was not extremely hot! You could stay in hotels for less money, but it was still a great deal! We left to other parts of the island for three days and they kept our larger bags until we came back for a day. They also charged us only a day-rate because we were leaving that evening on the plane.
It is located in a fairly nice part of town. We did walk down the hill to get a better rate on a taxi, because the drivers wait outside the hotel area and charge more. Out son lived there for two years, so he spoke Malagasy and that helped so much, but you could still get around OK. I know that locals who live there recommend it to their friends and family who come to visit, especially those with French ties.
I have recommended Le Pavillon de L'Emyrne to friends who are going to Tana this next year. It is kind of hard to find in the travel books because it is owned by a family. Contact me if you want the direct phone numbers. The price was the same though through the Travel Site I found, but you could secure your information a bit better by contacting the hotel directly. There were a few English speakers on the staff!
