“Characterful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2010

A characterful small hotel (which looks like a house) in Tana rather than swish luxury (I don't know if Tana does swish luxury!) in a quiet and safe feeling location on a hill. We ate twice at Kudeta just 3 minutes walk away and enjoyed an excellent dinner each time. We stayed at the hotel twice and had different rooms. No 4 had polished wood floors, a double bed in small bedroom and a separate sitting room which looked as if it was converted from a verandah, a bathroom off that with a huge old fashioned bath but no hot water came out of the tap, shower with plenty of hot water. No 2 was more of a traditional shaped room, with French style furniture, 2 windows facing different directions and a shower room. Continental breakfast was good (eggs were offered) in a bright little breakfast room, next door to a sitting room with squashy chairs. On our second night we had to leave very early, before breakfast started, and a beautifully laid tray with pastries, coffee and hot milk was brought up to our room which was very kind.

Maybe we are mxing our experiences in Tana (hot, dirty, poor, loads of hassle) with our review here.

It is well placed, not too far from town, but in the short time we had here we never really managed to get our bearings. We took taxis everywhere and the concierge was always happy to find one for us. Fare negotiation was for us though.

Our "room" was in the wing and was actually a super apartment with kitchen, living, amazing bathroom and bedroom. It had been freshly refurbished, and was sparkly new and modern. However, it lacked the views and the character we were hoping for in this hotel, and was opposite the "service entrance" and so was rather noisy at times.

Free tea and bikkies in the communal lounge area and very friendly staff.

Having spend 2 week on an organised tour of Madagascar and having stayed in several substandard hotels, albeit in amazing places, I needed and wanted a bit of luxury before the epic journey home to the UK. I had spent ages looking for the right place, and went with the reviews on this site. In a word, fantastic! Beautiful hotel, room with all the mod cons that I had not seen for 2 weeks, air con, wifi, mini bar, huge bed, 24 hr electricity ( no the norm in Madagascar) etc etc. I was a bit concerned as not mentioned in either of the 2 guide books, but it doesn't matter. Book this hotel its great!

Stayed here for 1 night in what may have been the honeymoon suite (it was our honeymoon, at least) Our room was large, with a large comfortable bed and flat-screen TV.
The hotel itself is very nice, the halls are adjourned with old pictures, miscellaneous items (gramophone!) and bookshelves which gives it quite a formal air.

We left too early for the normal breakfast, but had it delivered to our room instead. The receptionist spoke good english, and you can use the computers in the reception to check your e-mail (albeit very slowly)

We had a nice stay, and would certainly return if we go back to Tana.

We were also with our 21 -year-old son, so we had a larger room for three persons on the walk-out basement level. It would have been wonderful to be upstairs overlooking the gorgeous garden with rod iron gates and fences. It is a gated old house with 12 rooms. The staff speaks French and Malagasy. A caretaker is there 24 hours a day and they keep your key for you!
Breakfast was included and very delicious, especially the hot milk and fresh ground-up chocolate. The room was clean and had two full-size beds that were pushed together, to make a giant king size plus bed! Our son stayed on a fold out half-couch. There was a tiled shower and an outside patio. The room was spacious, more so than in Europe.
There were two large dressers, two small desks, a coffee table and comfy rugs on the floors. They had two computers and internet and several videos and books you could use.
We paid about $150 USD a night for three persons. It was about $35 less the night we stayed without our son and then $95 on the day-rate. I don't know if there was air-conditioning. We didn't need it being on the lower-level. it was a tiny bit musty. It was also winter in Madagascar, so it was not extremely hot! You could stay in hotels for less money, but it was still a great deal! We left to other parts of the island for three days and they kept our larger bags until we came back for a day. They also charged us only a day-rate because we were leaving that evening on the plane.
It is located in a fairly nice part of town. We did walk down the hill to get a better rate on a taxi, because the drivers wait outside the hotel area and charge more. Out son lived there for two years, so he spoke Malagasy and that helped so much, but you could still get around OK. I know that locals who live there recommend it to their friends and family who come to visit, especially those with French ties.
I have recommended Le Pavillon de L'Emyrne to friends who are going to Tana this next year. It is kind of hard to find in the travel books because it is owned by a family. Contact me if you want the direct phone numbers. The price was the same though through the Travel Site I found, but you could secure your information a bit better by contacting the hotel directly. There were a few English speakers on the staff!

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel after escaping from poor service and an overpriced room at the Lapasoa down the road.

Coming to the Pavillion de l'Emyrne was a totally different story... beautiful old house, nice room, lush garden and nice staff. At night they brought candles and mosquito coils to keep the bugs away where we were sitting in the garden. In the the living room there was tea, cookies and magazines and a great "old" atmosphere because of the antiques and decoration.
Breakfast had what we needed, and it didn't feel so mass-produced like the ones you get at some hotels.

The only downside is the price.. but we thought it was worth it, and would definitely stay there again!

We stayed here for one night on two seperate occasions as part of our honeymoon. We also stayed at Royal Pallisandre. This place is a much more homely feel and moe B&B than 5* hotel. That said the rooms are very high quality with local materials and nice hi spec bathrooms.
its basically a big Malagasy house that has been very well restored, it is in a very good location in the quiter cleaner side of town. In terms of food we had breakfast there and it was very good in a lovely dining room/conservatory more of a B&B breakfast than a hotel style buffet but lacking nothing. For dinner we ate out and nothing was too far away
Drawbacks: nothing really apart from the staff are a little slow off the mark considering how nice the hotel.
All in all it makes a great base to explore the city and in reality you dont wont to stay in Tana for more than a few days so you wont get bored with this place in that time.
Didnt try the Spa but can seriously recommend the one at the Royal Pallisandre. See my review
