“Best of limited options in Maseru”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2013

I have stayed at both sun international properties in Maseru and the rooms are far better at the lesotho sun. They are modern and refurbished.

There are very limited hotel options in Maseru and lesotho generally so limited competition does not help with competitive pricing meaning that neither option are cheap.

The plus points for this hotel are:
Modern rooms and bathroom
Nice views over Maseru
Good buffet breakfast

Negatives:
Hotel gets very busy at weekends due to the casino and was quite rowdy during my visit, parking can also be tricky at peak times
Pool is small
Location is less central than the Maseru sun

Lesotho is a beautiful country with friendly people and fabulous scenery but limited hotel options so given the choice I would stay here again, but suggest you visit with relatively low expectations

Room Tip: Try and beta high floor room away from elevator with views over Maseru

We just spent 2 nights in Maseru while I was working at a local college, booked by a company I do some work for. At breakfast I overheard another guest saying there was a need for a medium priced hotel in Maseru and when I received the bill, I understood why.

The hotel is totally overpriced for what you get - accommodation is fairly comfortable and staff are friendly, but the hotel is in need of an overhaul if it is to charge the rates they charge.

The hotel seems like it is hanging on to former glory. The carpets in the passages have watermarks all along the edges, the carpet at the main door is frayed, an aircon barely moved air around the room, the plug in the basin needs rechroming, as the base metal is showing through, windows were murky......

Dining was another problem - items on the bar menu are unavailable, the beer and wine were warm, the buffet was less than exciting with overdone beef and lumpy custard, the staff did not clear plates until asked and the breakfast selection was not replenished swiftly - only a few pieces of grapefruit were left at the fruit station for quite some time.

For R1800 for a night, this was just not good enough. A special advertising a room and 2 breakfasts for R900 obviously wasnt offered to the company that booked my accommodation.

There's a gap in the market for another hotel - who is going to take it up?

I have stayed here numerous times on business over the past three years for the location but I have finally given up. Front desk, food and drink service and other staff are often slow and surly, systems are not well organized, rooms have always needed simple repairs that systematic maintenance and normal attention to detail would pick up. It all needs to be tightened up considerably. Points to a management issue that I know has been raised in the past, and it is frustrating to stay here.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, advise a mid day check in even though flights come in the morning. Check out...

The real africa with the thrills of a white xmas in July. Friendly people and cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately Lesotho does not capitalise on its tourism options and most attractions are in opposite directions. Best way to get to know about what to do is to ask at reception and at the hotel

Room Tip: Rooms and hotel have been recently refurbished. Tourist centre does not have a lot of information on...

This was my fourth stay at this hotel in the past 10 years. I like the setting and the view, and routinely take the hike up the hill behind the hotel for even better views. The hotel itself is aging but decent. My bed was comfortable and the shower was strong and hot. However, I had poor drainage in both the shower stall and the sink, which was inconvenient to deal with. The restaurants were both good enough, though the main buffet could stand a bit more variety. Wifi was good, but available only by buying a chit. The staff were generally pleasant, but not so enthusiastic.

Room Tip: Many of the rooms have nice views.

I recently had to overnight in Maseru while on business and we decided to stay at the Lesotho Sun - a place I had last stayed at 10 years ago. I must admit I was quite impressed with the hotel as it has been freshened up quite bit whislt still keeping its basic structure. They really do try hard and I think it is payng off. It certainly seemed to be a lot busier than it was when I wa slast there. The rooms are greatly improved and all seem to have had a facelift. While it probably doesn't compare with the most upmarket hotels in the region it is clean and comfortable and offers the business traveller most of what they need. They do have a few issues which they should address and I have tried to touch on these below - but it did not detract form the stay which overall was very good. The rooms are well appointed but then are spoilt by the quality of the fittinings in the bathrooms (they have cheap and nasty shower heads so water sprays all over the show when showering). The bar service was also terrible in the downstairs bar - which also serves the Casino (which is probably why it s slow). They do offer wifi but you have to buy a voucher but the minimum value of voucher was M180 for 500 mb. When you just want to check a few emails this seems ludicrous. My suggestion would be to add about M10 to each room and then give free wifi - or soemthing like that. The gym was very well equpped - one of the ebest around but some of the equipment needs a service. I ate at the buffett and the food was outstanding value for money - it was delicious and cheap (when last did anyone pay M150 for a buffett?). The breakfast, as has become a norm for this group was excellent. Overall one or two tweaks and this could be a fantastic hotel again.

Room Tip: All the rooms have a woderful view of the city

No doubt this is the nicest hotel in town. Beautiful property and nicely appointed rooms. However, having previously stayed in several Sun International hotels, they definitely need to straighten up their act, service wise.

Pros: Modern amenities, nice comfortable room, hot water and heating. Doorman was helpful.

Cons:
- Airport transfer was costly and service was every inefficient, you need to go search for the driver upon arrival, load your own luggage in the trunk and the driver demanded payment upon arrival.

-Not too helpful check- in; the staff was very busy chit-chatting among themselves and lack of enthusiasm answering questions about the amenities/service of the hotel. Some requests were ignored.

- A hint of smoking odor in our bathroom even it was on the non-smoking floor.

- Restrictive dining hours; restaurants open at 6:30pm for dinner, was told that we could not order room service beforehand.

- Breakfast spread was acceptable. Lots of restaurant staff standing around but not doing anything.

- Fee for Wi-Fi
