“Good budget option...if the church is closed!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2012

I stayed 2 nights and was very happy with the service and room, but I did have the unique experience of being kept awake until 4 .a.m. by an all night church service next to my room! This may have been a one-off, but it was terrible...absolutely deafening. The restaurant is poor and often closed, so you'll need to eat elsewhere...perhaps at the Indian right across the road. Excellent value for money, all in all.

Room Tip: Avoid room #8 on church nights!

I stayed here for 5 nights. At 70 Cedi (about 40 bucks US) count your lucky blessings that you're staying here because I'm almost sure that you won't find anything this decent for less than 100 Cedi. The rooms range from 40-70 Cedi, with 70 yielding you a large room with fridge, little desk and en suite bath. I found the staff to be as responsive as you would hope for a moderate-budget accommodation like this.

I give it 5 stars not because it's the Ritz Carlton, or even high-end lodging for Accra like Movenpick or Labadi Resort, but because it felt good to be able to pocket most of my cash yet have a place that wasn't exposing me to mosquitos (think Malaria in this part of the world) or loud street noise, or any other unanticipated nuisance. Also, the place generally wasn't disgusting like you'd typically find at this price point, and didn't seem to harbor random critters like roaches or geckos (or lord knows whatever else)... again distinct possibilities for budget places in Ghana.

Seriously, anyone who would have any complaints about staying here and paying so little is utterly delusional and probably shouldn't visit Africa. This particular place is safe, quite, has decent rooms, helpful staff, and a perfect location (walking distance from "Circle", but generally close by Accra Central and just about anything worth seeing in town).

If you have any problems, just ask for owner Sam, he stays on-site much of the time, and seems like the kind of business man who appreciates the importance of his international guests having the best time possible during their stay in Accra.

All told, if you're looking to find an acceptable place for 50 USD or less, then look nowhere else. Enjoy Ghana.

Room Tip: I would probably only stay in the "suite" style room personally, as its only marginally mo...

At 70 cedi for a large room with your own bathroom and shower, the Ampax must be one of the best places to stay in Central Accra if you're on a budget. There were also smaller rooms available at 60 cedi.

Our room was large, as was the bed. There was airconditioning, but it was stuck on 24° and the staff politely asked me not to try and change it, as this could result in a total breakdown. So the room was cooler than outside, but not really cool. The shower worked fine, but flushing the toilet was a bit problematic.

There was only one towel and no bed sheet, but the staff brought some when we asked for them. Cleanliness could have been better, but a lot worse too. Don't expect the staff to be very enthusiastic, but they do what you ask for.

The Ampax Hotel is well located in Asylum Down, a rather quiet neighbourhood of Accra. From the large balcony you can watch the activity on the street. It's only a short taxi ride away from the main sights and transportation hubs (if traffic is fluid).

In short: if you have a lot of money to spend, there are probably more luxurious places around. But if you're travelling on a budget, the Ampax offers value for your money and we would definately recommend it.

Watch out, there's another Ampax Hotel in the suburb of Pokuase (which is a lot further away from the city center). The right website for the Ampax in Asylum Down reviewed here is: www.ampaxhotelaccra.com.
