“Bags of character - but prison like room in the new wing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

The Taitu is something of a hit-and-miss, depending on what you want in a hotel and which room you end up getting.

The old building and great terrace oozes character and history, and offers an undisturbed view over Addis. Great to sit and enjoy a drink, or some Ethiopian food from the good kitchen. The place is also buzzing with people such as backpackers, tourists, students, artists, NGO types etc.

I was located in the 'new' wing, and as soon as I returned to my room my good 'vibe' about the Taitu disappeared... The new wing is a concrete structure that reminds me most of a prison. The rooms were also very basic and run down. The bathrooms worked and had hot water, but needed a good clean and redo.
I couldn't be placed in the old wing, but I would imagine that this offers a better experience.

Otherwise, The location is also quite convenient, about good 20 min walk to the National Museum. The superb Tomoca coffee shop is about 5 min away.
At night the awesome Jazzamba club is located in the main ballroom, great for nice evening discovering fabulous Ethiopian jazz. The staff were also very friendly and helpful.
Regarding value, I felt this was ok looking at the total package.

So, it's probably up to you whether you fall in love with the Taitu or run away as soon as you see your room. For me the upsides were more than compensated by the downsides, as you're hardly in your room anyway. And after a night 'in prison' walking up the stairs to the old building and ordering a coffee on the terrace the room quickly becomes a distant memory.

Room Tip: Probably the old wing/building?

Character? Yes. Good location? Yes. But the shared bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. I've done a lot of budget travelling and this was one of the worst - non-flushable toilet, barely functioning and super-grimy shower (which was a hand held showed in a slippery bath), leaking taps and constantly wet floor, etc etc (check out the photo). They've got a lot of staff kicking about, but no-one seems to care to clean the place up a bit, a shame given the character of the place.

Horrible bathrooms aside, even if you don't stay there, the vegan lunch buffet in the restaurant should not be missed - just excellent.

The messed up the booking they had confirmed by email the night before - charged me double for a single room with shower than I could have got down the road at Baro. But no complaints about restaurant - good food, good value.

You like something else than a concrete building to sleep.
Taitu is the right place.
You like to sit quiet outside in a nice compound ?
Taitu is the right place.
You like to meet other travellers ?
Taitu is the right place
Even they managed now to cook well.
All to Taitu.

Room Tip: Just look in the old building

A nice old hotel in the centre of the Piazza, the old wing is your best bet. The new wing is dark, cold and rather gloomy. The old building has all the character, with high ceilings, lovely wooden stairs and balconies - good for taking in the action going on below. Sadly the building is in very poor condition, it's very clear that the ground floor restaurant is the focus, not the hotel. There are a number of rooms on the first floor (6 from memory), which all share a single bathroom, so you need to get in early for a hot shower and sadly the toilet seat was missing. It's a real shame to see such a grand old building in such disrepair.

Aside from the bad, the taitu is good place to stay, with very good food and music right outside your door. The vegan lunch is a must. Good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the old building. Facing the road also faces the jazz club, so choose the other s...

Really good location, and interesting background, it isn't as snazzy and it may seem. Food wasn't too bad, service was good and people were friendly. Perfect for a backpacker on a budget, or a first time trip to Addis to be in the center of town. Be careful leaving the hotel, as it is full of foreigners it tends to attract sometimes dodgy locals outside. The best taxi driver that operates outside is called 'Monday', he'll help you out for sure. Try and get a room in the main house, they are x1000 better than the rooms in the back by the building work, for many reasons; less lady's of the night, less extravagant night time activites etc. Sometimes the water turns off, but the showers are hot when they work! I would not be too happy staying there alone though.

Room Tip: Try and get a room inside the main building, with a door that locks!

Yes, it looks to be a nice place and the oldest hotel in Addis bla bla... But it is the worst hotel I ve had in Ethiopia in 1 month of intensive travelling.

price: waay overpriced ( 350 birr for a double room): for the same price you can get two rooms in similar (better) hotels less than 200 meters away

food:
a la karte: Ok but way overpriced
Buffet: looks good ( specially the vegan food) and price is ok.

service: no doubt the worst we had in Ethiopia and maybe in the world!
examples:
1. booked a room a day before ( and payed for it) only to find out the next day (at 12:00!!) its is not available anymore.
2. no electricity in the bath
3. TV not working
4. used toilet paper and similar unhigenic stuff in the middle of the room!!

last but not least the restaurant service!!
40 minutes for a drink ! 20 minutes for the bill !! ( no joke ) we ate there more than one time and the service was always slow! very slow .. in addition to the fact that the staff does not understand simple english ..
example
please one tea and the bill ( cos we don't want to wait for another hour after we have the tea)
we get ( after more than one hour!) one tee one MILK! and one coffee !!! ( overpriced)

positive: bed sheets are clean, the internet (wifi) works sometimes , and nice atmosphere in the restaurant (if food and service is not a priority for you)

in short: dont go there unless you really have to!

Room Tip: save yourself the pain.
