My stay in Addis was part of a humanitarian trip to aide the people of Southern Ethiopia. At first I was annoyed that my hard earned money was to be spent on a few nights in a luxury hotel...but the staff more than made up for my discomfort in the contrasts of Ethiopia.
I was greeted by name, and greeted each staff member by name because of their well-placed name tags. Each person was willing to tell me the meaning of his/her name and engage in conversation with me, no matter what their job title: from the sweetest maid to the strongest security guard to the concierge and door greeter. Each one made my stay special and fun. They admired me when I wore Ethiopian dress, encouraged my learning of Amharic and Oromo languages, and spoke with me in both English and French when the occasion arose.
The concierge located a driver for my large group to tour the Mother Theresa compound, a local orphanage, and to shop within 40minutes of my request.
The business/computer office staff helped make phone calls and internet connections when our safari fell through. The tour office put together a wonderful city tour with Timket, when our group was emotionally at its lowest.
The service staff in the buffet restaurant cheerfully created hot chocolate for me each morning without me even saying a thing, once they knew that I liked chocolate. I even got to converse with the French chef, in French!!
The building may have been built by a Sheik, but the hotel is run in the humble gentle manner of Ethiopia...a spirit that I found alive and well in the Sheraton Addis Ababa.
Give my love to everyone...I may have forgotten all your names in the rush of daily life back in California, but I will never forget your kindness and thoughtfulness. I will definitely return to Ethiopia and the Sheraton!!
With Love, My prayers too!
