I was impressed by the GT Guesthouse before we'd even arrived in Addis Ababa. The manager, Lee (Lewam) was efficient and helpful in her communication with us from the beginning. She promised to help organise for my Ethiopian-born daughter to have her hair done in true Ethiopian style and forwarded information about activities we might enjoy and told us about the good restaurants nearby.
Her driver met us at the airport at exactly the time we'd arranged. The guesthouse location was exactly as described & was reasonably central. The accommodation itself surpassed my expectations because it was so large and so clean. In my daughter's eyes our rooms were 'like a palace'. The beds were enormous and very comfortable. The bathroom was spotless & we always enjoyed a good supply of hot water.
It was the staff and service we appreciated most of all. An early morning arrival meant we were hungry, & although we had no right to expect breakfast or lunch, we were really well looked after. The included breakfast was always tasty and very generous (our particular favourite was the pancakes).
Lewam exceeded her management role on more than one occasion; by coming to the hairdressers with us, personally guiding our taxi to a particular restaurant, organising for her sister to drive us to church when there were no other drivers available, and lending us some of her personal DVD collection. She gave us access to a local mobile number for a small fee and kept us informed if there were issues relating to water or wifi. We were always confident that she had such issues well in hand and we were rarely effected. The wifi access was very good.
In my case, I was happy to enjoy an adult conversation at least once a day! In fact it seems almost condescending to mention Lewam's English at all, because she speaks and understands the language as well as I do, but I guess it's something others considering the guesthouse may want to know. The rest of the staff did not have the same skills, but TG (who served breakfast etc.) was absolutely delightful, keen to cater to our every need and certainly clear on our requirements. The men who manned the gate were lovely too.
The guesthouse may have been more expensive than some others in Addis Ababa, but given the level of care, comfort and cleanliness, it was worth the money. It was the right choice for us given the nature of our trip. My daughter was back in Ethiopia for the first time in twelve years (after being adopted as a baby) and she needed the feeling of security and comfort we were provided. It became our home for the two weeks we were there.
