“Make you feel like family”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Of course any review on accommodation must be understood as a comparison to other places in Addis, not from a pre-conceived Western perception. So seeing electrical wires hanging out at power points everywhere is the norm, not the exception in that city. Having said that GT was a great place to stay, and the family running it will do all they can to make you feel at home. We rented an entire floor for our family, and stayed twice there in December 2012 and January 2013.
The sitting/dining room is huge as is the master bedroom with a large bathroom attached, although the longer I sat on the toilet the more I started to believe I was living in Buckingham Place, complete with throne (see photo) Lee the Manager was educated in the US and her English is so good it is hard to believe she is not actually American, at least to an Australian ear.
This is a rare thing in Addis. The house maid girls are two beautiful, gentle souls who are at pains to help you in any way, never interrupting your stay. Their English can be dodgy, but my Amharic is a lot dodgier, everyone just smiles a lot and its all ok! The free wifi is just ok, but that is Ethiopian Telecom's fault not GT. You can rent 3G simcards for your ipad/iphone from a place in Bole and as they are only US $16 per week, I found it wise to have both the 2G (from GT) and 3G options as one is always invariably down.

GT is about 3 kms from Meskel Square and the just a few good restaurants in Addis. As we were in the city for a month eating mainly Injere, I must admit I ended up with a craving for Western food by the end of it. I actually I found the best western style cafe in the city with the best view of Addis anywhere on my very last day. My problem was my not actually asking Lee for the information earlier! Anyway it is near the Austrian embassy and walking distance from GT.
Anyway, bottom line is that GT Guesthouse is a safe, friendly, cost-effective option for any stay in Addis Ababa.

Must say that orur stay at the GT was a success from day one. A kind staff, good language skills, which is not that common in Addis, and a spacious flat was what welcomed us.

A hot breakfast, served at the time that suited us, clean and well functioning kitchen and bathrooms, but most of all the friendly staff, is what we remember. I will recommend this to anyone staying in Addis.

With a great manager (Lee) the GT guest House is the beat place in town! We enjoyed all of the family who welcomed us in loving arms. With their pure Ethiopian culture, money is secondary. At times we had quite busy schedules, with many visitors coming to meet us,but the GT guest house staff met to all of a needs without any complaints. It was a safe and secure place for a family with children to stay in. My two children enjoyed the Mighty German Sheppard, MAX, which I have to admit I loved too. He is very friendly and good with children. As I said before, It was ' An Unforgettable stay' that we'll surely remember. Definitely our next holiday would be at GT guest house

Very clean and roomy; exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, great local breakfast, relatively well located (convenient for airport). Ideal for an Addis stopover, and better than anything else in this price range.

Room Tip: Cheaper options have shared bathrooms, but these are very well maintained.

We spent two weeks at GT over the Christmas holidays. Outside of a few minor issues (parking, low water pressure on the third floor in the morning), the experience was great. Lee and the staff were very sweet and the coffee ceremony every week in the sitting room was a nice touch.

Staying at GT is a bit like having your own place in Addis, except that you didn't have to hire a cleaning woman, organize breakfast every day, restock the fridge with beer and water, set up internet and utility service...so a pretty easy lifestyle, all in all.

Also, sitting on the upstairs deck and watching the kites (birds) in the afternoon and the blue birds in the early morning is quite lovely.

Room Tip: You can rent an entire floor. Not a bad option if you have more than two persons in your group.

As other reviewers have pointed out, Lee is friendly and efficient and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Check out was well before my evening flight, but Lee was very accommodating in offering to store my luggage and allowing me the use of the living room. I was most struck by the friendliness of the staff, many of whom "lit up" in greeting--even when I ran into them outside of the guest house. It's a very nice sense of community.
