“really odd”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

This could well be a monument from Mao Tse Tung or Stalin, a bizarre reminder of a horrific time in Ethiopia when radical socialists took over the country and directly and indirectly killed millions of people. I am yet to get a convincing answer from an Ethiopian on why they don't bulldoze it.

“Derg Monument - obelisk”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

There's really nothing there except the statue...we drove by it :O
I didn't get close to it; its in a very busy part of town, watch your pockets.

“Might be worth a drive by…”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

This place has been taken over by vagrants, but they leave you alone. The guard needed some enticement to let me snap a photo, he just seemed nervous about pictures. It was worth 5 good minutes but you could get just as much by just stopping and taking a photo from your car. The place smells a bit like an open air toilet. I didn't need a guide but had decided prior this was going to be a quick stop.

“Soviet style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

Cool Soviet-style communist monument. Watch out for the hordes of kids hanging around the area that might try to pickpocket you.

“Historically important but overrun by hustlers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

This monument is open to the public but when you walk on the grounds you may be approached by young punks who insist you need a "ticket" for 32 birr (about $2). Of course no ticket is required. Best just to view the monument from the street (Churchill street) unless you can find a police officer to accompany you...
