“Fair hotel, but with a few problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012

The hotel is of a reasonable standard for a capital city of a less developed African country. it is quite well located, only being a short distance from the airport (but not too close). The room was clean enough and big enough. The air conditioner worked and there were a few TV channels. Wireless internet worked for most of the time. The staff were generally helpful. The food in the restaurant was reasonably good. The pool also very nice and good to jump into after a long hot day.

There were some security problems in Ouagadougou whilst I was there. Part of the army revolted and there was a lot of shooting. Many shots were fired outside the hotel. The government declared a curfew and all of the staff left the hotel, apart from one man in reception. All of the guests also fled, apart from 2 of us. This meant there was no one to provide food or anything else. After some argument, the man in reception provided a key for the kitchen and I was able to go and find a few scraps of food to prepare myself.

Of course, a lot of this was not the fault of the hotel. But they did not warn us that the staff were leaving and no service would be available.

Stayed at Yibi before and after going on a field research trip to the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. Rooms are pretty basic, but clean and very comfortable. Staff is helpful and friendly. However, basic french skills are a must when communicating with hotel employees.
Breakfast is basic. And the garden/yard with a medium sized pool is lovely.
Also, the hotel is located right in the heart of Ouagadougou in close proximity to the airport and with plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants right by.

I visit Ouaga about twice a year for in-country stays between 2-4 weeks. After having done quite a few hotels around the town centre, Yibi has become my chosen "pied à terre". It is not perfect, but has the necessary perks to make Ouaga liveable during my stays. In no particular order : the rooms are clean, well arranged and relatively free of the dreaded mozzie; the staff are really friendly, the restaurant is good and has a diverse menu (though I always start with the poulet bicyclette on my first night); the location is fine and it is easy to reach other restaurants on the main strip (once you have worn out the menu); all the basics are there (unless they aren’t ....but that’s Ouaga) such as wifi, (hot) water, aircon, etc. And, Yibi always finds a me room, whilst other places are always full (I’m quite last minute in planning). Drawbacks : a couple of eager souvenir sellers roam the streets in front, don’t go to the bar on the opposite side of the road, occasional lacklustre water pressure and a breakfast that becomes very dour after 3 days. But watching the bats fly down and skim the pool water in the evening is nice, with the poulet bicyclette and a cold Flag!

Room Tip: Must ask for a room facing the pool and not the street

Located along the main street coming from the airport and convenient for banks and restaurants.
Yibi is a small hotel with no pretentions. Rooms are comfortable - but have very thin doors. The restaurant has its menu in both French and English, - a left over from when it was the Hon. British Consuls base. There is a small friendly bar and a reasonably sized swimming pool that is cleaned every morning.
WIFI is available and is strongest around the pool/bar area.
Breakfast is basic.
Staff are helpful.
