“Pleasant short-stay hotel in Gabarone, Botswana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

On our way from Johannesburg, South Africa to Maun, Botswana where we flew to our 1st safari camp, we over-nighted at the Gabarone Sun Hotel. The grounds are lovely with a resort-feel; the buildings' exteriors are well-maintained; and the lobby is modern and welcoming. Our room was spacious, clean, and well-appointed for our short stay. The staff offered to provide a boxed breakfast in the morning for our 5:45am hotel departure for our 7am flight to Maun. The "Western" style hotel food was adequate for our late evening snack and drink. Overall a convenient, nice facility for short business or tourism visit since it was a 10 - 15 minute drive to the airport.

First impression of the hotel compared to its surroundings is that it's a dime piece, but really it's a B in my book and way to expensive with that considered. I will say that the rooms were nice and had everything you would need. I was traveling with my hubby and two toddlers and the room was large enough to hold the two pack 'n plays. The housekeeping staff were very nice and helpful but I was very annoyed with the staff in charge of breakfast in the cafeteria. Every single day I was harassed about my validity of being there while many others were not questioned whatsoever so my nerves grew very thin. There is a pool but it is right by the cafeteria and bar which smelled horribly. Literally had to hold my breath whenever I had to pass the bar. There is a decent play area for children as well. The casino is at the other side of the rooms and surprisingly the hotel was still very quiet. All in all I would not stay there again especially after finding out that breakfast is not included. Also had to pay for Internet which I am definitely not used to having to pay for at a hotel.

From check in to check out this hotel was poor. Check in was 2pm but the room was not ready. But if you push...one suddenly becomes available. The rooms are dirty, shabby, and smell. They also have old fashioned TVs which barely work and a/c that is floor mounted and incredibly noisy. The restaurant and bar staff and friendly and good. Unlike the reception staff. Food is very average and seems to centre around making sure you have a big plate of chips. I would not recommend this hotel to tourists or business people. The sewage smell at the outside bar area is foul. Their stand out problem is their reception staff - who spend their time in the back office talking and ignore guests waiting at reception.

Having visited many hotels in Africa this was a poor experience. There is a casino attached but u have to pay to go in and it's part of the lobby! Staff were the highpoint but the low points were the pool area which smelt of sewage and the food...oh dear....lunch by the pool was awful and horrid quality....dinner had to be in the main restaurant as the fine dining was shut and was again very very average. Will not stay there again.

I stayed at the Gaborone (pronounced Hab-or-own-eh!) Sun Hotel from 1st to 5th April 2012 for a business trip.

I would first of all like to commend the booking staff (especially a lovely lady called Pearl) for their attitude and efficiency over the phone whilst I was making my booking. Pearl was friendly, confident, professional and funny as hell! We brought her some chocolates from the UK as a thank you.

I was pleasantly surprised that the hotel runs a complimentary bus service from the airport and meets every flight into Gaborone. It only takes about 15 minutes to get to the GSH and the staff were again very friendly and helpful. Check-in was absolutely fine and the hotel was much better than I expected from some of the reviews on here. It was clean, modern and seemed to run efficiently.

I was given a room in the suites in the garden facing the lake (I think Makaluri or similar name) so can’t comment on other rooms, but mine was fine, spacious and better than most business hotels in other African countries I have visited. The TV was small, but I hardly used it and there were plenty of UK-style plugs sockets for charging up electrical items. The showers had great pressure and the toiletries were fine. My room was clean and well kept and had access through French doors to the rear garden which was nice.

The pool in clean and well maintained and gets most of the day’s sun if you want to sunbathe. The food in the restaurants is all very heavy – meat and carbs based fare you find all over Africa, but was cooked well and took no time to prepare. Everything comes with fries! The breakfast was substantial and always of good quality and the buffet dinner likewise. The pool bar has a friendly atmosphere and has live music most nights (a guy with a guitar and keyboard).

The hotel is in a good location (although it doesn’t take long to get anywhere in Gaborone) and there are plenty of local taxis that you can book either immediately or in advance outside. Check-out was equally efficient and hassle free. I didn’t go into the casino so can’t comment on that.

Pros: good location, GREAT staff, nice bar, decent rooms, price (try to haggle), nice pool area

Cons: limited international food, expensive internet

The Gaborone Sun hotel includes a casino, but if like me you were there for business, its fine - the sleeping rooms are well away from the casino. The hotel features a decent buffet breakfast and a pool bar/restaurant. The rooms haven't been updated for decades and it shows, but they are reasonably clean. Internet is paid but not particularly expensive. Staff are friendly and tried to help (for example when I arrived early they quickly sorted out a room for an early check in).

Stayed here in Feb 2012. Very clean and updated rooms. Beautiful garden with a pool. Tennis, squash and gym, all very nice and clean. Very friendly staff all over, we miss you Herold! Breakfast is great! Buffet dinner was awesome!!! Pool bar is also great and friendly. Cool and relaxing atmosphere, nice place to draw back from the hustle and bustle in the city. Going to Gabs? - Don´t hesitate, visit the Sun!

Room Tip: Facing the garden, NOT the parking area
