“Just got back from great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

On an 3 week trip in Africa this was the highlight of our trip. Unique camp with luxury accommodations. Very helpful staff who had great tour suggestions and attentive to our needs. Good food and quiet setting made for a restful stay.

From the moment we arrived we were welcomed by friendly smiling faces and we were amazed by the breathtaking views and sprays of the Victoria Falls from the deck of the camp. The food was always delicious and never the same for the 6 nights we stayed there. Every request to be taken in and out of the camp to attend activities and tour the town were met with complimentary transport.
The staff was forever helpful and friendly. The mini bar in our tent was forever stocked up to the fullest not forgetting the forever open bar by the main deck. Very grateful to Jonathan, Hilda, Shepard and the rest of the crew for making our holiday amazing.

Our first trip to Africa started in this amazing setting. Jonathan and his team made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The views toward Vic Falls and the Zambezi River gorge never get old. The food was excellent as was the service. The rooms are very nice but we spent a lot of time in the central lounge, where you can mingle with visitors from around the world over drinks while looking out at the beautiful African scenery and wildlife! I highly recommend it! If you go, do the walking safari with Sylvester the Cheetah. Amazing!

Our stay in Elephant Camp was truly special- Wonderful accommodation with great hosts. They took us everywhere we wanted to go. The suites were spectacular, the food good and the venue superb. The hotel was not full, but the other guests were delightful too, making for a perfect stay!

Room Tip: All suites are basically the same and beautiful. If you want to be closer to the main lodge where...

I recently took 8 New Zealanders to Victoria Falls before my wedding in South Africa and we stayed at the Elephant Camp which was just out of this world. There is nothing to fault about the place. The rooms are totally luxurious, air conditioned with big baths (with a view!) and showers and your own deck with a plunge pool. The food is absolutely delicious and they ensure that you never go hungry! And the staff are incredibly attentive and kind. Camilla and her team looked after us so well and did such a great job ensuring that we had a fantastic stay in Vic Falls. I would have no problems recommending the Elephant Camp to any of my friends and family – it is THE place to stay! Also make sure that you do the morning walk with Sylvester - a truly incredible experience. My only regret is that we did not have more time there!

Spent 3 nights, mid-December 2012 in tent 5. The camp is amazing and we were very happy with the choice to stay there.

The tent is huge: four-poster bed, sitting area, outside deck, splash pool, full indoor bathroom and outdoor shower. The stunning bathtub (roll up the tent panel for a view!) and the outdoor shower were sheer indulgence! The spray of the falls was visible from most of our tent.
All mini-bar drinks are free and there is even a cookie jar! The free Wi-Fi connection was very good. No TV but didn’t get a chance to miss it. Tent has air-conditioning, ceiling fan and mosquito net (mozzies still get past the net). The complimentary mosquito spray came in very handy.

Meals are light and fresh. Think fish with mango salsa, citrus coleslaw, roasted veg, homemade ice-cream and fruit-based desserts. Don’t expect burgers, starchy meals or huge portions. Although I am vegetarian (thanks go to the chefs for the extra effort!), I am also a bit of a foodie and found all my meals delicious. My partner is not keen on many veg and fruit and he struggled a bit. The only thing I missed was chocolate.

Our stay’s highlight was the rare opportunity to spend time with Sylvester, the orphaned cheetah. Loved our morning walk so much that we went back for seconds. Everyone has different tolerance levels when it comes to human-wildlife interaction ethics but, given Sylvester’s earlier life and the fact that he cannot be rehabilitated back into the wild, the setup was fine for me. Yes, there are photo opportunities that may be seen as commercial but this is certainly not a petting zoo programme. Sylvester’s caretakers are extremely passionate about him and his welfare. Sylvester also acts as a Cheetah Ambassador and his role in education is taken seriously. The walk is free and, as far as I can gather, limited to camp guests. On the subject of wildlife, the camp also offers elephant back safaris. We opted to just meet the elephants. While I don’t think in any way these specific elephants are harmed or abused I knew this ride is something I will not be personally comfortable with on ethical grounds and don’t regret skipping it.

Another activity we loved was the sunset canoe ride. Pure magic complete with wild elephants! Casper was our river guide and we highly recommend him (trip organised by camp via Wild Horizons office for just the 2 of us).

Some advice for transfer back to camp after visiting the actual falls: we were told by the helicopter operators who dropped us off at the park’s entrance to cut across a field to Victoria Falls Hotel to organise transfer. On this shortcut we were pestered by extremely persistent vendors. Although later told that it’s safe, we nevertheless felt exposed and vulnerable. I suggest the longer walk along the main road or a pre-arranged pick-up time.

Few negatives about to the camp: some bath mats are a bit old and would have liked to see more info on any green or social responsibility initiatives undertaken by the camp/ Wild Horizons. Also had an expectation to see more wildlife (especially elephants) on the property (saw warthogs once from the tent, buffaloes once by the big waterhole). Regardless of these, we had amazing stay and I wholeheartedly recommend The Elephant Camp.

The team is clearly a chief asset: they are passionate, put their hearts in what they do and it shows. The managers on duty organised all our activities, pick-up/ drop-off times etc. extremely efficiently. You get the feeling that no request is too much trouble for them. A big thank you to Jonathan, Moses, Hilda and the rest of the team! We owe another special thank you to Ed (Sylvester’s “PA”), Gift and Andrew!
