“excellent food, service and experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2011

The restaurant is very elegant and formal, but not stuffy. Though we did dress for dinner we didn't go overboard and felt very comfortable. There was a pianist to quietly entertain throughout the meal. We chose the 6 course formal dinner with complimenting wines. The courses were: amuse bouche of sushi, scallops, parsnip soup, fillet steak, cheeses and trio of desserts, followed by coffee and truffles. All for $66 each ($40 for the meal $26 for the wine and port). The food was excellent and we could not fault anything that we ate. It was all cooked to perfection. We both enjoy eating more than anything else and we were in our element. The courses were not overfacing but quite sufficient to be pleasantly full by the end. The wines were chosen with the food in mind, including port with the cheeses and dessert wine with pudding.
We spent 16 days in Zimbabwe and South Africa and didn't have a bad meal at all - but this was by far the best!

“A beautiful viewpoint and some very good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2010

We didn't make it to tea at the hotel or stay there but wanted to stop by and visit so had a quick lunch there one day. The view of the bridge was gorgeous and the experience was very colonial in a classic way. The food was also quite good and they were quick to serve as we were in a bit of a rush. Thumbs up.

“absolutely charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2009

This is one of the last great bygone era restaurants that exist. its stately, charming and one has to be grossly insensitive to ignore the plight of the country to judge this by very high first world standards. It is obviously hard to get the food that they would like - I know - i have dined there regularly over the years and it has always been excellent. the fact that menu is not what it was is not the hotel's fault. The decor, ambience, service and charm is exquisite. it is a brilliant experience.,

“Trying hard to manufacture old elegance, but just not up to the task.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2008

Based on what we'd read, we came here for their famous restaurant, for what we thought was going to be an elegant meal in a stately five-star hotel.

Our actual experience was somewhat surreal. While the Zim economy is in ruin, other hotels in Vic Falls have still managed to keep up standards, but the VFH was very down at the heels. It appeared to be almost entirely tour groups. In our 30s, we were at the bottom of the age range.

Our dinner experience was somewhere between Out of Africa and Disneyland. The staff tried hard to act out their assigned roles as if it were an elegant colonial restaurant, but their efforts could only go so far as the actual restaurant was quite shabby and the food was not good. We couldn't wait to get out of there.
